Vincent King
Rex Thomas Vinson (October 22, 1935 – May 2000) was an English art teacher, artist and science fiction author active in writing in the late 1960s and early 1970s, who wrote under the pen name of Vincent King. Writing career King's novels were published by Gollancz, Tandem, Sphere Books and Futura Publications in England, and Ballantine Books in the United States. His short fiction was published in John Carnell's ''New Writings in SF'' series. Some of his work has been translated into French, Spanish and German. His most successful book was his novel ''Candy Man'' (1971), which went through a number of editions in the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries, and was a selection of the UK Science Fiction Book Club in 1972. Ballantine Books
Ballantine Books is a major book publisher located in the United States, founded in 1952 by Ian Ballantine with his wife, Betty Ballantine. It was acquired by Random House in 1973, which in turn was acquired by Bertelsmann in 1998 and remains part of that company today. Ballantine's original logo was a pair of mirrored letter Bs back to back, while its current logo is two Bs stacked to form an elaborate gate. The firm's early editors were Stanley Kauffmann and Bernard Shir-Cliff. John Clute
John Frederick Clute (born 12 September 1940) is a Canadian-born author and critic specializing in science fiction and fantasy literature who has lived in both England and the United States since 1969. He has been described as "an integral part of science fiction's history"Davis, MattheJohn Clute: Yakfests of the Empyrean, ''Strange Horizons,'' 18 September 2006. and "perhaps the foremost reader-critic of sf in our time, and one of the best the genre has ever known." He was one of eight people who founded the English magazine '' Interzone'' in 1982 (the others included Malcolm Edwards, Colin Greenland, Roz Kaveney, and David Pringle). New Writings In SF
''New Writings in SF'' was a series of thirty British science fiction original anthologies published from 1964 to 1977 under the successive editorships of John Carnell from 1964 to 1972 (the last volume with the aid of Diane Lloyd) and Kenneth Bulmer from 1973 to 1977. There were in addition four special volumes compiling material from the regular volumes. The series showcased the work of mostly British and Commonwealth science fiction authors, and "provided a forum for a generation of newer authors." It is the earliest of four notable science fiction original anthology series of the 1960s and 1970s. John Carnell
Edward John Carnell (8 April 1912 – 23 March 1972) was a British science fiction editor known for editing ''New Worlds'' in 1946 then from 1949 to 1963. He also edited ''Science Fantasy'' from the 1950s. After the magazines were sold to another publisher he left to launch the '' New Writings in Science Fiction'' anthology series, editing 21 issues until his death, after which the series was continued by Kenneth Bulmer for a further 9 issues. Taken together his publications played a role in starting the careers of Damien Broderick, Brian W. Aldiss, James White, J. G. Ballard, and his successor at ''New Worlds'', Michael Moorcock. Despite that list, Carnell tended to prefer adventure and Hard SF to New Wave experimentation so John Christopher, Kenneth Bulmer, and E. C. Tubb were more typical of his tenure.
