Vincent is a suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. Geography Vincent is bounded by the Douglas–Garbutt Road (Nathan Street) to the west, Garbutt–Upper Ross Road (Dalrymple Road) to the north, Cambridge and Anne Streets to the east, and Charles Street to the south. The land use is predominantly residential except for a shopping centre and two schools. History Vincent is situated in the traditional Wulgurukaba Aboriginal country. The suburb was named on 1 January 1967 after Major William Slade Vincent of the volunteer militia. He was the first commanding officer of the 3rd Queensland Regiment (Kennedy Regiment) based at Kissing Point, Townsville. The Vincent State School opened on 30 January 1968. The City of Townsville is a local government area (LGA) located in North Queensland, Australia. North Ward is a coastal suburb of Townsville in the City of Townsville, Queensland, Australia. In the , North Ward had a population of 5,065 people. Kennedy Regiment
The 31st Battalion, Royal Queensland Regiment (31 RQR) was a Reserve infantry battalion of the Australian Army. Although it was officially formed as 31 RQR in 1965 the battalion can trace its lineage back to units formed in 1881 as part of the colonial defence forces of the state of Queensland. Over the course of the unit's 127-year history, the unit has largely been used for home service, although it was awarded 42 battle honours. During the Second Boer War members from the battalion went to South Africa as part of the Queensland contingent, for which the battalion received its first battle honour. Manbarra
The Manbarra, otherwise known as the Wulgurukaba, are Aboriginal Australian people, and the traditional custodians of the Palm Islands, Magnetic Island, and an area of mainland Queensland to the west of Townsville. The Manbarra people were forcibly moved off the Palm Islands in the 1890s by the Queensland Government, and hundreds of people drawn from many Aboriginal nations on the mainland were moved to an Aboriginal reserve on Great Palm Island in 1914, becoming the Bwgcolman people, who inhabit the island today. Name The name "Wulgurukaba" translates to "canoe people". Language Wulguru/Manbarra was one of two Nyawaygic languages and constitutes the fourth class of the Herbert River languages, according to Robert M. W. Dixon.
