Villianur
Villianur, or Villianour, is a town in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. It is a commune panchayat and the headquarters of the Villianur taluk of Puducherry District. Kameeswarar temple is the major landmark in the town. Location Villianur is located at a distance of 9 kilometres south of Puducherry Municipality. It forms a part of the Puducherry urban agglomeration. The town houses famous hindu temple Kokilambigai udunurai sri thirukameswarar Kameeswarar temple. Located in the banks of Sankaraparani River. surrounded by more industries. It has several years old Villianur railway station,formed during french rule. Demographics According to the 2001 census, Villianur had a population of 104,000. It is the third largest town in Puducherry District after Puducherry and Ozhukarai. Our Lady Of Lourdes Shrine, Villianur
Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine is a famous Marian shrine located in Villianur Town, Puducherry, India. This Roman Catholic shrine is devoted to Our Lady of Lourdes. The venerated Marian image enshrined within received a Pontifical decree on 21 February 1886 from Pope Leo XIII to declare the site an official Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes and to canonically crown the statue. History In 1867, the MEP missionaries in Puducherry wished to build a Chapel at Villianur which is 13 kilometers from Pondicherry, on the road to Villupuram. Hence they bought a piece of land at Villianur and Rev.Fr.Gou, then procurator of the Puducherry mission after a long negotiation with the Hindu temple authorities of Thirukameswarer Gogilambigai Temple started to build a Chapel at Kanuvapet on the outskirts of Villianur. Pondicherry District
The Puducherry district, also known by its former name Pondicherry district, is one of the four districts of the union territory of Puducherry in South India. The district occupies an area of , spread over 11 non-contiguous enclaves lying on or near the Bay of Bengal within a compact area in the state of Tamil Nadu. According to the 2011 census, the district has a population of 950,289. Administrative divisions For administrative purpose, the union territory of Puducherry is divided into eight taluks.
