Villa Malfitano Whitaker
Villa Malfitano Whitaker is a 19th-century villa in Via Dante, in the quarter of Politeama of Palermo, Sicily. It is presently a museum displaying Whitaker's natural history and archaeological collections, as well as his artwork. History The villa was built between 1886 and 1889 for the Anglo-Sicilian businessman Joseph Whitaker and his wife Tina Whitaker. It was designed by the architect Ignazio Greco and represents a synthesis of Neo-Renaissance and Eclecticism styles. The state rooms were frescoed with a rich floral trompe-l’oeil decoration by Ettore De Maria Bergler. Whitaker Family
The Whitaker family is an US-American family notable for its involvement in the life of Sicily. Benjamin Ingham set up a wine business in Marsala and his relative Joseph Whitaker expanded and diversified the business. Their story is told in Raleigh Trevelyan's 1972 ''Princes Under the Volcano: Two Hundred Years of a British Dynasty in Sicily''. A hereditary title of Whitaker baronets was awarded in 1936. Beginnings in Sicily Benjamin Ingham is considered the main source of the Whitaker family wealth and had sailed and arrived in Sicily in 1809, where he focused on manufacturing and exporting wool and wine. Rocco Lentini (1858 – November 1943) was an Italian painter, noted for directing the team responsible for the ceiling decorations of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. Biography Rocco Lentini was born in Palermo in 1858 and died in Venice in 1943. His father, a scenographer, was his first master. He won as scholarship from the community to study at Bologna, then to Paris. He exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1879 and in the 1878 Promotrice of Turin. He painted Genre and landscapes in watercolor and tempera. He also studied scenography. His landscapes feature vistas and places in Sicily.
