Viktor Kupradze
Viktor Kupradze ( ka, ვიქტორ კუპრაძე; November 2, 1903 – April 25, 1985) was a Georgian mathematician. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (1935), professor (1936). Member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1946). Biography Viktor Kupradze was born in the village Kela, Lanchkhuti Municipality on November 2, 1903 in the family of a railwayman. After graduating from the Kutaisi Technical School in 1922, he continued his studies at the faculty of Physics and Mathematics at Tbilisi State University. When still young, Kupradze participated actively in publle work. Kupradze published his first scientific work in 1929 at the age of 26. In 1935 he defended his doctor’s thesis. During the Great Patriotic War Kupradze served in the Soviet Army. In 1943 he was demobilized and appointed vice-rector of Tbilisi State University, responsible for research work. Elasticity (physics)
In physics and materials science, elasticity is the ability of a body to resist a distorting influence and to return to its original size and shape when that influence or force is removed. Solid objects will deform when adequate loads are applied to them; if the material is elastic, the object will return to its initial shape and size after removal. This is in contrast to ''plasticity'', in which the object fails to do so and instead remains in its deformed state. The physical reasons for elastic behavior can be quite different for different materials. In metals, the atomic lattice changes size and shape when forces are applied (energy is added to the system). When forces are removed, the lattice goes back to the original lower energy state. For rubbers and other polymers, elasticity is caused by the stretching of polymer chains when forces are applied. The Order of the Badge of Honour (russian: орден «Знак Почёта», orden "Znak Pochyota") was a civilian award of the Soviet Union. It was established on 25 November 1935, and was conferred on citizens of the USSR for outstanding achievements in production, scientific research and social, cultural and other forms of social activity; for promotion of economic, scientific, technological, cultural and other ties between the USSR and other countries; and also for significant contribution to basic and applied research. The order was awarded 1,574,368 times. The "Order of the Badge of Honour" was replaced by the "Order of Honour" (russian: Орден Почёта) by a Decree of the Presidium of the USSR on 28 December 1988.
