Vikhra River
The Vikhra (russian: Вихра), or Vichra ( be, Віхра) is a river in Smolensky, Krasninsky, and Monastyrshchinsky Districts of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, and Mstsislaw District of Mogilev Region, Belarus, a right tributary of the Sozh, flows through Monastyrshchinsky District and is long. The urban-type settlement of Monastyrshchina is located on the banks of the Vikhra. The Battle of the Vikhra River occurred in the area. The source of the Vikhra is close to the village of Korytnya in the southwest of Smolensk District, Smolensk Oblast, Russia. The Vikhra flows south, crosses the north-eastern corner of Krasninsky District and enters Monastyrshchinsky District. In Monastyrshchina it turns west and in the village of Skreplevo turns southwest. It crosses into Belarus downstream of the village of Bachenki. Smolensky District (russian: Смоле́нский райо́н) is an administrativeResolution #261 and municipalLaw #135-z district (raion), one of the twenty-five in Smolensk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the west of the oblast and borders with Demidovsky District in the north, Dukhovshchinsky District in the northeast, Kardymovsky District in the east, Pochinkovsky District in the south, Monastyrshchinsky District in the southwest, Krasninsky District in the west, and with Rudnyansky District in the northwest. Battle Of The Vikhra River
The Battle of the Vikhra River ( lt, Vichros mūšis, russian: Битва на реке Вихре, be, Мсціслаўская бітва) took place on 29 April 1386 on the Vikhra River, tributary of the Sozh River, near Mstislavl between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Principality of Smolensk. The Lithuanians achieved a decisive victory and Smolensk was forced to accept being a vassal of Lithuania. Andrei of Polotsk fought with his younger half-brother Jogaila for the throne of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Andrei allied with the Livonian Order and Prince Svyatoslav II of Smolensk, who wanted to reconquer the Principality of Mstislavl. In February 1386, when Jogaila and his allies celebrated his wedding to Jadwiga of Poland and coronation as Polish king in Kraków, the Order invaded Lithuania, almost reaching Vilnius. Monastyrshchina (russian: Монастырщина, pl, Monasterszczyzna) is an urban locality (a settlement) and the administrative center of Monastyrshchinsky District of Smolensk Oblast, Russia. It is located on the left bank of the Vikhra River, in the western part of the oblast. Population: History Monastyrshchina is known since the end of the 13th century or the beginning of the 14th century, when a skete was founded here. Between second half of the 14th century and the middle of the 17th century, the area belonged intermittently to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, to Poland, and to the Grand Duchy of Moscow.
