Vik, Gaular
Vik (also ''Vikja'' or ''Viken'') is a village in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the north shore of the river Gaula, on the eastern end of the lake Viksdalsvatnet. The village was formerly located in Gaular municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, before the merging and creation of new municipalities and counties in Norway on 1 January 2020. The Norwegian County Road 13 highway runs through Vik, on its way from Sunnfjord to the north to Balestrand to the south. Viksdalen Church
Viksdalen Church ( no, Viksdalen kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Vik. It one of the four churches for the Gaular parish which is part of the Sunnfjord prosti ( deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1848 using designs by the architect Hans Linstow. The church seats about 284 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1322, but the church was not new at that time. The first church in Viksdalen was likely a wooden stave church that was built in the 13th century. The church was historically called ''Vik Church''. Balestrand
Balestrand is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The administrative center was the village of Balestrand. Other villages in the municipality included Ese, Kvamme, Låne, Sæle, Tjugum, and Vetlefjorden. The municipality was situated at the confluence of the Fjærlandsfjorden/Esefjorden and the main Sognefjorden. The major industries in the municipality were tourism and farming. Norwegian County Road 13
County Road 13 ( no, Fylkesvei 13) did run between the village of Dragsvik in Sogndal Municipality and the village of Moskog in Sunnfjord Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. Until 2010, the long road was part of National Road 13 but administrative reforms passed this part of the road to the county. County Road 13 and a short section of County Road 55 are designated as one of eighteen National Tourist Routes in Norway. The road crosses the Gaularfjellet mountains. In 2019, the road was renumbered to County Road 613, as a part of a reform aiming to have separate numbers of National Roads and County Roads. Sogn Og Fjordane
Sogn og Fjordane (; English: "Sogn and Fjordane") was, up to 1 January 2020, a county in western Norway, when it was merged to become part of Vestland county. Bordering previous counties Møre og Romsdal, Oppland, Buskerud, and Hordaland, the county administration was in the village of Hermansverk in Leikanger municipality. The largest town in the county was Førde. Although Sogn og Fjordane has some industry, predominantly hydroelectricity and aluminium, it is predominantly an agricultural area. Gaula (Vestland)
The Gaula is a river located in the Sunnfjord region of Vestland county, Norway. The long river is the central part of the ''Gaularvassdraget'' watershed basin which covers about across the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The river is a good salmon fishing river. The river runs across the whole municipality of Gaular, and the river is the namesake of the municipality. Course The river begins as glacial runoff in the Gaularfjellet mountains and it runs through the municipalities of Sunnfjord and Sogndal. The glaciers that feed the river are Grovabreen, Jostefonn, and Troget, all three are located just west of the massive Jostedalsbreen glacier. The river starts up in the mountains and empties into a fjord at sea level, and so the water drops over in elevation throughout its course.
