Vietnamese International Film Festival
First started in 2003, the Vietnamese International Film Festival (also known as ViFF) is a biennial film festival organized by the non-profits Vietnamese-American Arts & Letters Association (VAALA) and University of California, Los Angeles, UCLAs VietNamese Language and Culture (VNLC). ViFF takes place at the University of California, Irvine, the University of California, Los Angeles, and other locations in and near the Little Saigon area of Orange County, California, Orange County, California. Part film festival and part community-service event, to date ViFF is the only film festival reserved for filmmakers of Vietnamese heritage in the world outside of Vietnam. Film Festival
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some film festivals focus on a specific filmmaker, genre of film (e.g. horror films), or on a subject matter. Living In Fear
''Living in Fear'' is the second and final studio album from the supergroup The Power Station, released in 1996. Background In the pre-recording stage of the album, the band had the same lineup as for their previous album in 1985 (Robert Palmer, Andy Taylor, John Taylor and Tony Thompson), and all four musicians worked on the writing and arranging of the songs. However, John Taylor was going through a divorce at the time, as well as entering drug rehab, and pulled out before the album was recorded. Instead Bernard Edwards, the producer, played all bass parts on ''Living In Fear'', and took over as the group's official fourth member. John Taylor still receives writing and arranging credits on the finished album, but does not play on it, and is not listed as a group member. Unfortunately, Edwards died of pneumonia in Japan before the album was released; the album is dedicated to his memory. ''Thiên mệnh anh hùng'' (天命英雄), known as ''Blood Letter'' and ''Sword of the Assassin'' in English, is a 2012 Vietnamese martial arts action fantasy directed by Victor Vu, produced by Phuong Nam Films and Saiga Films, in association with BHD. One of the most expensive Vietnamese films ever made, ''Blood Letter'' is considered the first film of its kind, Kiem Hiep (Sword fighter Adventures) in Vietnam. It was released theatrically in Vietnam on January 20, 2012 by Megastar Media. The film was going to be the official submission for Vietnam to the 86th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. Khoa Do (Vietnamese: ''Đỗ Khoa'', ), is a film director, screenwriter, and philanthropist. He received the Young Australian of the Year Award in 2005. Early life and family The Do family left Vietnam in 1980 as Vietnamese refugees, fleeing Saigon by boat. At the age of 18 months, Khoa narrowly escaped death at the hands of Thai pirates. They arrived in Sydney in August 1980. Do received a scholarship to attend St Aloysius' College in Milsons Point, graduating in 1996. He studied Law and Arts at the University of Sydney. His brother is the comedian/author Anh Do. His mother, Hien, played the role of Van Nguyen's mother, Kim, in '' Better Man'' (2013), a film which he produced. ''Mother Fish'', also known as ''Missing Water'', is a feature film written, produced and directed by Khoa Do. The film draws largely from Khoa Do's own experiences as a Vietnamese refugee, and reflects on the perceived fear in the general population generated by 'boat people' which is prevalent in Australian politics and discourse. Plot ''Mother Fish'' follows the story of a middle-aged Vietnamese woman (Hyen Nguyen) working in a suburban sweatshop. In the evening when the workers have left, she is transported back to the night she and her sister (Sheena Pham) fled her homeland, led by an uncle promising to reunite them with their father.
