Viennese Girls
''Viennese Girls'' (German: ''Wiener Mädeln'') is a 1945 historical musical film directed by Willi Forst and starring Forst, Anton Edthofer and Judith Holzmeister. The film was made by Wien-Film, a Vienna-based company set up after Austria had been incorporated into Greater Germany following the 1938 Anschluss. It was the third film in Forst's "Viennese Trilogy" which also included ''Operetta'' (1940) and '' Vienna Blood'' (1942). The film was finished in 1945, during the closing days of the Second World War. This led to severe delays in its release, which eventually took place in 1949 in two separate versions. One was released by the Soviet-backed Sovexport in the Eastern Bloc and the other by Forst. Plot The composer Carl Michael Ziehrer produces twenty two operettas during his career, although he is overshadowed by the more successful Strauss Family (Johann Strauss I and his son Johann Strauss II). Willi Forst
Willi Forst, born Wilhelm Anton Frohs (7 April 1903 – 11 August 1980) was an Austrian actor, screenwriter, film director, film producer and singer. As a debonair actor he was a darling of the German-speaking film audiences, as a director, one of the most significant makers of the Viennese period musical melodramas and comedies of the 1930s known as ''Wiener Filme''. From the mid-1930s he also recorded many records, largely of sentimental Viennese songs, for the Odeon Records label owned by Carl Lindström AG. Biography His first major role was opposite Marlene Dietrich in the silent film '' Café Elektric'' in 1927. However, he was best known for his characters in light musicals, which rapidly made him a star. Pauline Clémentine Marie Walburga, Princess of Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein (''née'' Countess Pauline Sándor de Szlavnicza; 25 February 1836 – 28 September 1921) was a famous Austrian socialite, mainly active in Vienna and Paris. Friedl Haerlin
Friedl Haerlin (29 December 1901 – 17 April 1981) was a German stage and film actress. During the 1930s she worked in cinema playing glamorous roles, mainly in comedy films. In the late 1930s, in order to boost her flagging career, she attempted to gain invitations to receptions given by Adolf Hitler. Her final film was the Austrian comedy ''Viennese Girls'' which was made in 1945, but was not released until 1949. Finding that offers of work were drying up, she later immigrated to Peru, although she returned to spend her final years in her Bavarian hometown of Gauting. Whenever she had time, Friedl Haerlin was a passionate racing driver. She set a women's record at the Semmering race in 1929. Hans Moser (6 August 1880 – 19 June 1964) was an Austrian actor who, during his long career, from the 1920s up to his death, mainly played in comedy films. Operetta is a form of theatre and a genre of light opera. It includes spoken dialogue, songs, and dances. Carl Michael Ziehrer (more rarely spelled Karl Michael Ziehrer) (2 May 1843 – 14 November 1922) In the 8th edition the article title changed without comment to Ziehrer, Carl Michael. was an Austrian composer. In his lifetime, he was one of the fiercest rivals of the Strauss family; most notably Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss.
