Brief history Softball was first introduced in Victoria during world war 2 by American Servicemen stationed in Melbourne as a way to keep Female nurses fit. The founding member of the Victorian Softball Association inc. was the Melbourne Softball Association inc. in 1941–42, this was the only member until 1956 when the Sunshine Softball Association inc. was formed by Sergeant McLeod of the Sunshine Police and Mr. Frank O'Brien of the East Sunshine Youth Club. Some 50 years onwards the Victorian Softball Association inc. has 18 Affiliated members, at its height there was a total of 22 Affiliates. Softball is a game Variations of baseball, similar to baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Each year Softball Australia holds eight National Championships. These are hosted by the various state bodies around Australia on a rotational roster. In 2006 over 800 people participated in these championship, with every state and territory entering at least one team. Australian Softball Federation
Australia's softball history began in 1939 when Gordon Young, Director of Physical Education in NSW, began to promote the game in schools and colleges. In 1942, during World War II, US army sergeant William Duvernet organised softball as a recreation for US nurses stationed in Victoria. Another American, Mack Gilley, introduced the game to Queensland in 1946. Australia's first inter-state championship was played in Brisbane in 1947 and was won by Victoria. The second national championship was held in Melbourne two years later. It was at this championship that the Australian Softball Federation was formed with Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales being the founding members. The other States of Australia have since joined. In 1967 the Lyndale Softball Club was formed when Waverley Softball Association invited Lyndale Primary School to enter a Pixie side into their competition. By the end of the season there were 40 keen, young girls wanting to play softball.
