Victorian Railways MT Type Carriage
The MT type carriages were railmotor trailers, used on the Victorian Railways (VR) in Australia. Construction When the VR built their AEC railmotors, it was realised that extra capacity was needed. To this end, they built the RailMotor Trailers, or MT class, specifically designed for the AEC railcars. When later railmotors were introduced, the same rollingstock code was used, resulting in the MT class being one which included several different designs. It was not uncommon for a train to be composed of one railmotor and two, three, or in rare cases, four trailers. Types AEC trailers These were numbered 1 to 24, painted red to match the four-wheeled AEC railmotors, and were the only MT cars that were four-wheelers. The Victorian Railways (VR), trading from 1974 as VicRail, was the state-owned operator of most rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria from 1859 to 1983. The first railways in Victoria were private companies, but when these companies failed or defaulted, the Victorian Railways was established to take over their operations. Walker Railmotor
The family of Walker railmotors were a type of diesel railcar operated by the Victorian Railways in Australia. After World War II, the Victorian Railways undertook a major rebuilding program known as Operation Phoenix. One of the first tasks was the upgrading of passenger services on country branch lines, through the replacement of 23 wooden-bodied railmotors built in the 1920s, and the withdrawal of steam locomotive hauled mixed trains. An initial order of twelve railcars, six railcars with trailers, and twelve railcars was placed with Walker Brothers, England. It was then extended to include a further ten railmotors and trailers. The first was delivered in 1948, with additions to the fleet running through to 1955. V/Line A Class (diesel)
The A class are a class of diesel locomotives rebuilt from Victorian Railways B class locomotives by Clyde Engineering, Rosewater in South Australia for V/Line in 1984–1985. History The class were rebuilt from B class locomotives originally constructed in the 1950s, as part of the ''New Deal'' reforms of passenger rail operations in Victoria. The rebuild contract was let in January 1983 to Clyde Engineering, Rosewater with the first locomotive entering service in May 1984, but the project was abandoned in mid 1985 after rising costs due to structural fatigue, with the 11th rebuild delivered in August 1985. DRC Railcar
The DRC (Diesel Rail Car) was a class of railmotor operated by the Victorian Railways on its country rail network in Victoria, Australia. The cars were built by Tulloch Limited in New South Wales, and featured aluminium and steel construction, air-conditioning, and twin diesel engines with hydraulic transmissions. History The first railcars of this type were built in 1970 for the New South Wales Government Railways as 1200 class railcars. Harris (train)
The Harris trains were the first steel-bodied Electric Multiple Unit train to operate on the suburban railway network of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. They were introduced in 1956, by the Victorian Railways, and last operated in 1988, although a number of the carriages were converted for other uses and are still operating. They were named after Norman Charles Harris, Chairman of Commissioners of the Victorian Railways, between 1940 and 1950. Description The Harris trains were commonly referred to as "Blue Trains" due to their deep blue colour, with only a yellow band about halfway up the body. H Type Carriage
The H type carriages are a class of interurban passenger carriage operated by V/Line in Victoria, Australia. Fitted with high-density 2+3 seating, they are typically used on short distance interurban services from Melbourne to Bacchus Marsh and Geelong. Victorian Railways Long W Type Carriage
The W type carriages were wooden passenger carriages used on the railways of Victoria, Australia. History Following World War I patronage on the Victorian Railways increased significantly, and there were insufficient high capacity carriages for the busiest routes. To overcome the problem, the W design was adjusted, with a longer and wider body, to produce the Long W series. The vehicles entered service from 1926. Design and Construction The 1926 cars were long over couplers and wide. They retained the curved (arched) style of roof, as previously employed on the last fifteen short W cars. South Australian Railways Brill Railcar
The South Australian Railways Model Brill railcar were two types of railcars operated by the South Australian Railways between 1925 and 1971. Introduced to run on country rail services, the "Barwell Bulls" serviced most of the state's railway lines until they were eventually replaced by both the Bluebird and Redhen railcars, with the last units withdrawn in 1971. Stony Point Railway Line
The Stony Point line is a greater-metropolitan railway line in Melbourne, Australia. The line extends from the Frankston line and is part of the city's suburban passenger railway network, and the Myki integrated ticketing system (Zone 2), but is not electrified like the rest of Melbourne's rail network. It has operated with a variety of rolling stock, and was the last suburban service in Australia to be operated by a locomotive hauled train.
