Victorian Railways L Class (electric)
The Victorian Railways L class was a class of electric locomotives built by English Electric and operated by the Victorian Railways and later V/Line from 1953 until 1987 primarily on the Gippsland line. They were the only class of main line electric locomotive operated in Victoria. History Australia was a relatively early adopter of electric traction and Electric Multiple Unit trains, with a General Electric advertisement in ''Railway Age'' magazine of 1924 claiming that Melbourne had the largest suburban electrification scheme in the world at 346 miles (557 km). However, electrification in Victoria had until the 1950s been restricted to the Melbourne suburban network. Apart from the EMU fleet the only electric locomotives operated by the Victorian Railways (VR) were a fleet of 12 small 620 hp (460 kW) types (two steeple cabs 1100 and 1101 plus ten box cabs 1102 to 1111). Newport Workshops
The Newport Railway Workshops is a facility in the Melbourne suburb of Newport, Victoria, Newport, Australia, that builds, maintains and refurbishes Rolling stock, railway rollingstock. It is located between the Williamstown railway line, Williamstown and Werribee railway lines. History Plans for a workshop at Newport started in the 1860s, to replace the temporary Williamstown Workshops but nothing came of it. It was not until 1880 that work began, when the Victorian Railways purchased annexes used at the Melbourne International Exhibition (1880), 1880 Melbourne Exhibition and erected one of them at Newport, naming it the Newport Carriage Workshops when it began operation in 1882. Construction of the permanent workshops commenced in 1884, and was completed in 1889. Although the earlier carriage workshop closed at this time, it reopened in 1895 to manufacture signal equipment. Warburton Railway Station
Warburton railway station was a station in the upper reaches of the Yarra Valley, 72 kilometres east of Melbourne, and the terminus of the Warburton railway line The Warburton railway line Rail terminology is a form of technical terminology. The difference between the American term ''railroad'' and the international term ''railway'' (used by the International Union of Railways and English-speaking .... The station opened on 13 November 1901 and closed with the line on 1 August 1965. The site is now at one end of the Lilydale to Warburton Rail Trail, which follows the route of the former railway. On 3 May 1909, to provide better facilities for the loading of timber from the numerous mills in the area, the track was extended to La La Siding, a short distance beyond Warburton station.
