Victorian Community History Awards
The Victorian Community History Awards are held annually to recognise the contributions made by Victorians in the preservation of the State's history, and to recognise excellence in historical research. The effect of the VCHA over the period from 1998 to the present has been the stimulation of community history, the lifting of standards and the fostering of diversity and originality. History The Victorian Community History Awards were established and sponsored in 1997 by Information Victoria. The judges have always been appointed by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, and among the first were Professor Weston Bate, Professor A. G. L. Shaw, and senior journalist at ''The Age'', John Lahey. Funding was suspended in 2006 to provide additional funds for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Victoria is a state in southeastern Australia. It is the second-smallest state with a land area of , the second most populated state (after New South Wales) with a population of over 6.5 million, and the most densely populated state in Australia (28 per km2). Richard Broome
Richard Laurence Broome, (born 1 October 1948) is an Australian historian, academic, and emeritus professor of history at La Trobe University, Melbourne. He is known as an authority on Aboriginal history in Australia. In 2007 Broome's book ''Aboriginal Victorians: A History Since 1800'' won the Victorian Community History Awards for Best Print / Publication. Prime Minister's Prize For Australian History
The Prime Minister's Prize for Australian History was created by the Prime Minister of Australia, John Howard following the Australian History Summit held in Canberra on 17 August 2006. The Summit looked at how the Australian government could strengthen Australian history in the school curriculum. Northern Territory History Awards
The Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Award is the premier prize for written works pertaining to the history of the Northern Territory of Australia. The NSW Premier's History Awards honour distinguished achievement in the interpretation of history, through both the written word and non-print media by Australian citizens and permanent residents of Australia. History The State Government of New South Wales, Australia established the Premier's History Awards in 1997, which were devised by members of the History Council of NSW including Max Kelly, Paul Ashton and Shirley Fitzgerald. Ernest Scott Prize The pre-eminent prize for "original published research that contributes to the history of Australia or New Zealand or to the history of colonisation in these countries." Awarded since 1943, the prize is named in honor of Ernest Scott, regarded as the first historian of Australian historiography, and was endowed by his wife, Emily Scott. The winner is announced each year at the Kathleen Fitzpatrick Lecture, awarded a prize of $13,000 and invited to give the Ernest Scott Lecture at the University of Melbourne. Applicants must be publishers and the work must have been published in the preceding two calendar years. Donald (Don) Chambers (12 July 1935 – 11 October 2015) was an author, historian and heritage advocate in Victoria, Australia. He was responsible for writing 11 books, on subjects including cemeteries and timber bridges. Early life and education Chambers was born on 12 July 1935 at Lilydale Bush Nursing hospital, on the eastern fringes of Melbourne, Victoria, to Alan and Hazel Chambers and spent his early years in the outer Melbourne suburb of Croydon, then moved to Euroa and Kelvin View. He was educated at Euroa State School, Kelvin View Primary School, Euroa Higher Elementary School to fifth form, then the last year available at the school, and completed his Leaving Certificate as a correspondence student. After leaving school he worked at the Avenel Estate of Tehan brothers and on his Uncle Harold Godden's Violet Town farm. Janet McCalman
Janet Susan McCalman, (born 5 December 1948) is an Australian social historian, population researcher and author at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne. McCalman won the Ernest Scott Prize in 1984 and 2022 (shared); the second woman to have won and one of eight historians to have won the prize twice. Early life and education McCalman was born in Richmond, Victoria, the daughter of industrial officer Laurie Brian McCalman and Hélène Ulrich. Her parents were members of the Communist Party of Australia. She won a scholarship to Methodist Ladies' College, Kew. At school, McCalman was head of the debate team and on the choir and yearbook committees. McCalman wrote polemics for the school yearbook in her final year (1966). One was in support of A. A.
