Victoria Wilkinson
Victoria Wilkinson (born 19 August 1978) is an English runner and cyclo-cross rider who was a world mountain running champion at junior level and who has several times been a national fell running champion as a senior athlete. Biography Wilkinson displayed significant talent as a junior, winning national fell running titles at under-16 and under-18 level. She also finished second in the English Schools Cross Country Championships in 1996. At that time she was coached by her father Chris who was also a runner and cyclo-cross competitor who had won the Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross in 1972. Victoria was also advised by Keith Anderson and others. Her most notable result as a young athlete was victory in the junior race at the World Mountain Running Trophy in 1997. A knee injury interrupted Wilkinson’s running career and she turned her attention to cyclo-cross, in which she competed at the World Championships. English National Cross Country Championships
The English National Cross Country Championships is an annual England, English cross country running event which takes place in late February following the regional championships (Southern, Midlands and Northern) which all take place on the same weekend usually in late January. The event is the oldest national cross country championship in the world, having been first run in 1876. The English, Welsh and Scottish National Cross Country Championships are all usually held on the same day. Format There are categories for senior men and women, junior men and women, U17, U15, U13 and club teams. The course is 12 km for men and 8 km for women and the fact that the distances for senior men and senior women is different has recently been a topic for discussion and review. Ring Of Steall Skyrace
Skyline Scotland is a set of annual skyrunning races which take place on consecutive days in the mountains around Kinlochleven in Lochaber. The main races are the Mamores VK, the Ring of Steall Skyrace, the Ben Nevis Ultra and the Glen Coe Skyline. The inaugural Glen Coe Skyline took place in 2015 and the Mamores VK and Ring of Steall were added in 2016. The Ben Nevis Ultra first took place in 2017. The races are sponsored by Salomon. In 2019, three trail races were added: the Grey Mare's Trail Race (5 km), the Loch Eilde Mór Trail Race (10 km) and the Three Mealls Trail Race (18 km). The courses include some of the most technical terrain found in running races. Ben Nevis Race
The Ben Nevis Race is a mountain race that takes place annually, from the foot of Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the British Isles) to the top, then back again. The course is 14km long and includes around 1,340metres of ascent. Up to six hundred people may compete in the event. History The first timed event on Ben Nevis was in 1895. William Swan, a barber from Fort William, made the first recorded timed ascent up the mountain on or around 27 September of that year, when he ran from the old post office in Fort William to the summit and back in 2 hours 41 minutes. The following years saw several improvements on Swan's record, but the first competitive race was held on 3 June 1898 under Scottish Amateur Athletic Association rules. Carol Greenwood
Carol Greenwood (née Haigh; born 15 March 1966) is an English former runner who won the World Mountain Running Trophy and was twice a national fell running champion. Greenwood won the World Trophy in Morbegno in 1986. She also finished third at the 1993 World Trophy and second at the 1997 European Mountain Running Trophy. She ran internationally on other surfaces too, representing her country at the 1984 and 1994 World Cross Country Championships. She ran in the World Women's Road Race Championships in 1984, finishing seventh, and was on the winning team at the Yokohama International Women's Ekiden in the same year. Domestically, Greenwood won the first English Fell Running Championships in 1986. Burnsall
Burnsall is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the River Wharfe in Wharfedale, and is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The village is approximately south-east from Grassington. It has a parish church, a chapel, two hotels with restaurants, a public house, and a primary school. The school, Grade II listed, is in the original 1602 grammar school building, a legacy of William Craven of nearby Appletreewick. There is a five-arched bridge over which the Dalesway passes. A path along the river from Burnsall to Hebden, to the north-west, dates to Viking times. The historic parish of Burnsall occupied a large part of upper Wharfedale.
