Victoria Street () is a major two-way road in Singapore. It links Kallang Road in the northeast with Hill Street in the southwest. En route, Victoria Street passes through the planning areas of Kallang, Rochor, Downtown Core and Museum. Bugis Junction, formerly known as Parco Bugis Junction is an integrated development located at Victoria Street, Middle Road and North Bridge Road in Bugis, Downtown Core in Singapore. The development consists of a shopping mall, an office tower and the InterContinental Singapore Hotel. History Developed by Parco Holdings, Parco Bugis Junction was completed in July 1995 as a mixed development comprising a retail mall, an office tower and the InterContinental Singapore Hotel. The development incorporated three streets, Bugis Street, Malay Street and Hylam Street, where it was built upon and also rebuilt the old shophouses used to be on the three streets. These three streets were glass covered and fully airconditiioned. Parco Bugis Junction was officially opened on 8 September 1995. Roads In Singapore
Road names in Singapore come under the purview of Street and Building Names Board of the Urban Redevelopment Authority. In 1967, the Advisory Committee on the Naming of Roads and Streets was formed to name roads in Singapore. The committee was eventually renamed the Street and Building Names Board (SBNB) in 2003. The secretariat role of SBNB was taken over by Urban Redevelopment Authority in 2010 and SBNB is under the Ministry of National Development of Singapore. The (URA) officially took over the in 2010, and now holds the responsibility of giving our streets appropriate names to honour the heritage of different areas on the island. All public streets, including roads for vehicular traffic and pedestrian malls, as well as private roads that are non-gated are officially named. Bugis+ (pronounced as Bugis Plus), formerly Iluma, is a 10-storey shopping mall located 5 minutes from Bugis MRT station. It is located within the Bugis district of Singapore and opened on 28 March 2009. Building Designed by WOHA, the facade of the mall plays with the theme of light and illumination, having high-tech features such as a light- and media facade designed by WOHA in conjunction with Berlin based media artists . The "crystal mesh" facade envelops the convex part of the building and brightly lit billboards will scatter across its flatter sides, unlike those in the Times Square. Its theme was inspired by its proximity to arts venues and tertiary institutions. History The opening of Iluma in 2009, was greeted with much fanfare. CHIJMES
CHIJMES (pronounced "''chimes''", acronym definition: ''Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Middle Education School'') is a historic building complex in Singapore, which began life as a Catholic convent known as the '' Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus'' (CHIJ). The complex is located at Victoria Street in the Downtown Core, within the Central Area, Singapore's central business district. The complex was used as a Catholic convent since 1852, with an acquired Caldwell House which was constructed in 1840–1841, an acquired Convent Orphanage house in 1855, the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Chapel in 1904 and an acquired hotel complex for the girls' school in 1933. The Caldwell House, currently a wedding venue, and the Gothic-style chapel, renamed as CHIJMES Hall, currently a function hall and also a wedding venue, have both been gazetted as national monuments. The Sisters of the Infant Jesus, also known as the Dames of Saint Maur, are a religious institute of the Catholic Church originating from Paris, France and dedicated to teaching. History Origins In 1659 Barré, who was a respected scholar within his Order, was sent to the monastery of the Order in Rouen. He became widely known as a preacher and his sermons attracted a large audience. In 1662 Barré saw the need for the education of the poor in France. France in the late 17th century was suffering from the effects of the Franco-Spanish War (1635–1659) and a terrible plague. As a result of his efforts to promote a planned parish mission in the nearby village of Sotteville-lès-Rouen, Barré came to see the suffering of the local population.
