Victoria Plunket
Victoria Alexandrina Muriel May, Baroness Plunket (17 May 1873 – 11 February 1968) was a nursing association founder and vicereine. After marrying William Lee Plunket, she moved to New Zealand and later the UK. Influenced by the health reformer Truby King, she founded the Plunket Society in New Zealand, offering free health services to mothers and children. She was also a patron of the Mothercraft Training Society. Early life Victoria Alexandrina Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood was born in Ottawa, Canada, on 17 May 1873. She was the youngest daughter and second-youngest child of Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood. Her parents were part of the Anglo-Irish Protestant Ascendancy. Her older sister, Helen, was involved in nursing and nurses' rights as well as her other older sister, Hermione. She was baptised in Quebec and named after her godmother, Queen Victoria. A viceroy () is an official who reigns over a polity in the name of and as the representative of the monarch of the territory. The term derives from the Latin prefix ''vice-'', meaning "in the place of" and the French word ''roy'', meaning "king". He has also been styled the king's lieutenant. Breastfeeding, or nursing, is the process by which human breast milk is fed to a child. Breast milk may be from the breast, or may be expressed by hand or pumped and fed to the infant. William Lee Plunket, 5th Baron Plunket (19 December 1864 – 24 January 1920) was a British diplomat and administrator. He was Governor of New Zealand from 1904 to 1910. Early life Born in Dublin, he was educated at Harrow and Trinity College Dublin. His parents were William, 4th Lord Plunket, the archbishop of Dublin in 1884–97, and his wife Anne, the daughter of Sir Benjamin Guinness. He entered the Diplomatic Service and was sent to Rome in 1889 as an attaché to the British Embassy there. In 1892, he was appointed in the same position to the embassy in Constantinople, and finally retired two years later.
