Victoria Hotel (Toodyay)
The Victoria Hotel is located on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia. It was classified by the National Trust of Australia in 1977 and added to the Register of National Estates in 1980. History The village of Toodyay was established in 1836 and in 1864 George Hasell constructed a single storey building here for James Thomas Woods. The bricks were made at the riverside and the lime was carried from Clackline. Woods ran a store on the site and obtained a storekeeper's gallon licence. In 1875 Woods added eight rooms to the store and from 1880 provided a venue for dances in the "long room". In 1882 Woods applied for a Billiard and Bagatelle License. In 1888 Woods converted the store into a licensed premises, which he called the Victoria Hotel. In 1892 Charles Corpaccioli leased the Victoria Hotel from J.T. Woods for a yearly rental of £100. Michael Cavanagh (architect)
Michael Francis Cavanagh (August 1860 – 29 May 1941) was an Australian architect, primarily known for his work in Western Australia from 1895 to the late 1930s. Early life and education Cavanagh was born in August 1860 near Beechworth, Victoria, the second son of an Irish born builder and contractor, John Cavanagh ( – 18 March 1895). In 1881 his family moved to Adelaide, South Australia, where his father took on a position as supervisor of public buildings in the Government Architect's Department. Cavanagh in his early teens first studied at the South Australian School of Art before entering the Government Architecture's Department, where he received architectural training (c.1882-1886). In 1887 he left to study architecture in London, in the studio-offices of John Slater, and then with Frank Baggallay and Walter Millard, before entering the National Art Training School. Early life and education James Charles Cavanagh was born in Melbourne in 1874, the third son of an Irish born builder and contractor, John Cavanagh ( – 18 March 1895). In 1881 his family moved to Adelaide, South Australia, where his father took on a position as supervisor of public buildings in the Government Architect's Department. Cavanagh was educated at the Christian Brothers College, Adelaide and then at the South Australian School of Art, following which he was articled to his older brother, Michael's, architectural practice. In 1891, Cavanagh enrolled as a student at the Royal Institute of British Architects, studying at the South Kensington Academy in London. Stirling Terrace is the main street of Toodyay, Western Australia, originally called New Road until 1905. Route description From the intersection of Toodyay Road and Goomalling Toodyay Road, Stirling Terrace travels north-west through the town for , to the west of the Avon River. Toodyay (, nys, Duidgee), known as Newcastle between 1860 and 1910, is a town on the Avon River in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, north-east of Perth. Victoria Billiard Saloon
Victoria Billiard Saloon is situated on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia and is one of the few remaining billiard saloons in the state. It was purpose built as a billiard saloon in the mid-1890s adjacent to the Victoria Hotel. The builder was H. Davey and the building originally comprised two shops with the saloon at the rear. It is of brick construction with corrugated iron roof gable roof. Australian Light Horse were mounted troops with characteristics of both cavalry and mounted infantry, who served in the Second Boer War and World War I.
