Victoria City Rowing Club
The Victoria City Rowing Club is a non-profit rowing club located at Elk Lake in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. VCRC offers a variety of recreational and seasonal rowing programs and services including programs for beginners, corporate retreats, customized training camps, and private coaching. There are three classes of membership: Junior (individuals under 19 yrs), Senior (individuals over 18 yrs), and Masters (27+). The other seasonal programs include: Youth Learn to Row, Youth Rec Rowing, Youth Summer Camps, Adult Learn to Row, Adult Rec Rowing, Novice Masters, and Community Corporate Rowing Challenge. The colours of the VCRC uniform are green, white, and black. The uniform features a green top with a white 'V' on the back and the club logo on the front, with black bottoms. The oars have a white blade and a green chevron or 'V' on both sides. The white 'V' on the uniforms and the green 'V' or chevron on the oars are symbolic of the 'V' in Victoria. Elk Lake (British Columbia)
Elk Lake is a large lake located in Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park in Saanich, British Columbia. Elk Lake and Beaver Lake are actually one lake as a shallow channel connects them. Elk/Beaver lake was known as the "Freshwater Playground of Victoria" in its heyday, the 1930s and 1940s. Harold Backer
Harold Backer (born 20 November 1962 in Selkirk, Manitoba) is a Canadian former Olympic rower and financial advisor. Olympic rowing He participated in three Olympic Games for the Canadian rowing team: 1984 in Los Angeles, 1988 in Seoul and 1992 in Barcelona. After retirement as an Olympic athlete, he became a rowing coach. Financial advisor and disappearance Backer established financial advisory firm Financial Backer Corp. In 2015 he disappeared after allegedly setting up a pyramid scheme that ran into trouble. His disappearance caused a B.C. wide search at the time, and was covered in an episode of '' The Fifth Estate''. In April 2017 he turned himself in to the police. David Calder (rower)
David C D Calder (born May 21, 1978) is a Canadian rower. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia. He graduated from Brentwood College School (Mill Bay, British Columbia) in 1996. He has competed at four Olympics: 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. Competing at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, he won the silver medal in the rowing event Men's coxless pair along with Scott Frandsen. They were the first Canadians to win a medal at the 2008 Olympics, when they won silver, for which Terry Paul was their coach. Anna-Marie de Zwager (born September 17, 1976) is a Canadian rower from Victoria, British Columbia. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, she finished in 7th place in the women's eight event, and at the 2008 Summer Olympics, she finished in 8th place in the women's quad sculls. Kevin Light
Kevin Richard Light (born May 16, 1979) is a Canadian rower. Early life He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia but has lived in Victoria, British Columbia since 1985. He began rowing at Stelly's High School in grade 12 and graduated in 1997. He was enrolled at the University of Victoria from 1997 until 2001 where he was part of numerous Canadian University Rowing Championships teams. The highlight of his university rowing career came in 2001 when Uvic beat the University of Washington at the Opening Day Regatta. He won the gold medal at both the 2003 and 2002 World Championships in Canada's men's eight team in Milan, Italy and Seville, Spain respectively. Rowing at the 2004 Summer Olympics took place at the Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre and featured 550 competitors taking part in 14 events. Gavin Hassett (born July 13, 1973 in Saint John, New Brunswick) is a Canadian rower. He began rowing in 1989.
