Victor Waddington
Victor Waddington (1907 - 1981) was a British art dealer, active in Dublin and then London, an early advocate for the work of Jack Yeats and Henri Hayden. He was the father of fellow art dealers, Leslie and Theo Waddington. Career He started the Victor Waddington Galleries at 8 South Anne Street, Dublin in 1927, having moved there from London. The gallery exhibited modernist and avant-garde work from Irish, British, and European artists. Other artists that were featured included Yvonne Jammet, Seán Keating, and Moyra Barry. Waddington is regarded as one of the main art dealers of the early years of the Irish Free State. In 1943 he became sole dealer and business manager for Jack Yeats and was crucial for his career and reputation. Jack Yeats
Jack Butler Yeats RHA (29 August 1871 – 28 March 1957) was an Irish artist and Olympic medalist. W. B. Yeats was his brother. Butler's early style was that of an illustrator; he only began to work regularly in oils in 1906. His early pictures are simple lyrical depictions of landscapes and figures, predominantly from the west of Ireland—especially of his boyhood home of Sligo. Yeats's work contains elements of Romanticism. He later would adopt the style of Expressionism. Biography Yeats was born in London, England. Henri Hayden
Henri Hayden, born Henryk Hayden (December 24, 1883 – May 12, 1970), was a Polish painter. Born in Warsaw, Hayden lived and worked in Paris. Hayden studied engineering at the Warsaw Polytechnic from 1902 to 1905, while simultaneously pursuing studies at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and eventually moved to France in 1907. In Paris, he became acquainted with the artists associated with the Ecole de Paris and later raised to prominence as a Cubist painter. Hayden said that "I only absorbed Cubism in 1915, after having swallowed and digested all of French painting in a few years. This rapid absorption led me, in a spirit of creative synthesis, without even realising, to Picasso and Braque's experimentation at the time." Leslie Waddington
Leslie Waddington (9 February 1934 – 30 November 2015) was a British art dealer who served as the chairman of Waddington Custot Galleries, 11 Cork Street, London. Early life and education Waddington was born on 9 February 1934. He was the son of Victor Waddington and his wife, Zelda Waddington ( Levine). He was educated at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, and the École du Louvre, Paris His brother, Theo, is also an art dealer. Theodore Balfour Waddington (born November 1943) is a British art dealer. Early life and education Theodore Balfour Waddington (born November 1943) is the son of Victor Waddington, and the younger brother of Leslie Waddington, both art dealers. Growing up, Theo and his brother played chess with Samuel Beckett when they were in Paris. Career At one time, he had five art galleries and at least 40 staff. Yvonne Jammet
Yvonne Jammet (1900 – 30 August 1967) was a French landscape painter and sculptor, who spent her career in Ireland. With her husband, Louis Jammet, she ran the well-known Dublin-based French restaurant, Restaurant Jammet. Life Yvonne Jammet was born Yvonne Auger in 1900, in Paris. Her parents were Félix Auger and Catherine (née Jammet), who were both restaurateurs. She studied art at the Académie Julian and the Atelier Jean-Paul Laurens. She married her third cousin, Louis Jammet, with whom she moved to Dublin in 1928 to take over running of his father's restaurant on Nassau Street. The couple had two sons and two daughters. Jammet died whilst visiting the United States in Lowell, Massachusetts, on 30 August 1967. She is buried at Deans Grange Cemetery, Blackrock. Seán Keating
Seán Keating (born John Keating, 28 September 1889 – 21 December 1977) was an Irish romantic-realist painter who painted some iconic images of the Irish War of Independence and of the early industrialization of Ireland. He spent two weeks or so each year during the late summer on the Aran Islands and his many portraits of island people depicted them as rugged heroic figures. However, he ceased to visit the Aran Islands in 1965. Life and career Seán Keating studied drawing at the Limerick Technical School before a scholarship arranged by William Orpen allowed him to go at the age of twenty to study at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin. Over the next few years, he spent time on the Aran Islands. In 1914 Keating won the RDS Taylor award with a painting titled ''The Reconciliation''. Moyra Barry
Moyra Barry (1886 – 2 February 1960) was an Irish artist, most noted for her paintings of flowers. Early life and education Moyra Aloysius Barry was born in 1886 in Dublin, the eldest of eleven children of Bernard and Jane Barry. Her father worked as a merchant. Although she was named Moyra, she was always known as Mary to her family. Barry attended Loreto Convent, North Great George's St., going on to the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) Schools from 1908 to 1909. Whilst studying with the RHA she won a number of prizes for composition and drawing, later moving to London to attend the Slade School of Fine Art from 1911 to 1914, being awarded first prize for painting from the cast 1913 to 1914. She lived and tutored English privately in Quito, Ecuador in the 1920s, before returning to the family home in Rathmines, Dublin in the 1930s. Waddington Custot is a London-based art gallery specialising in modern and contemporary art. Formerly known as Waddington Galleries, it has been situated on Mayfair's Cork Street since 1958. History Waddington Galleries was founded on Cork Street in 1958 by Victor Waddington, a long-standing art dealer based in Dublin. He headed the gallery with his son, Leslie Waddington. Victor eventually left to set up his own Victor Waddington Gallery, also on Cork Street, in 1965.
