Monte Sant'Angelo
Monte Sant'Angelo ( Foggiano: ) is a town and ''comune'' of Apulia, southern Italy, in the province of Foggia, on the southern slopes of Monte Gargano. History Monte Sant'Angelo as a town appeared only in the 11th century. Between 1081 and 1103, Monte Sant'Angelo was the capital of a large Norman dominion under the control of Count Henry, who was a vassal of the Byzantine Empire. The grotto which houses the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel where according to legend, St. Michael appeared in 490, 492 and 493, has been the site of many famous pilgrimages, which started from Mont Saint-Michel. Pope John Paul II visited the sanctuary in 1987. In the 17th century the city became part of the Kingdom of Naples, to which it belonged until the unification of Italy in 1861. Vieste
Vieste (; nap, label= Viestano, Vìst) is a town, ''comune'' and former Catholic bishopric in the province of Foggia, in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. A marine resort in Gargano, Vieste has received Blue Flags for the purity of its waters from the Foundation for Environmental Education. The area covered by the comune is included in the Gargano National Park. History In medieval times, the port was frequently attacked by pirates, Saracens and other enemies of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1554 approximately 7,000 inhabitants were enslaved by the Turks. Those deemed too elderly or infirm for slavery were executed. This event is commemorated in an annual ceremony. Geography The town is bordered by Mattinata, Monte Sant'Angelo, Peschici and Vico del Gargano. Rodi Garganico
Rodi Garganico (; Garganico: ) is a town and commune in the province of Foggia, Apulia, south-eastern Italy. Located on a promontory east of the Lago di Varano, it is part of the Gargano National Park and of the Mountain Community of Gargano. Rodi is center for the production of citrus fruits such as ''Arance del Gargano'' (Gargano Oranges) and ''Lemon "Femminiello" of Gargano'', both DOP products cultivated since the Middle Ages. It is a seaside resort with several long beaches located both west and east to the town. History Rodi is located in an area inhabited since prehistoric (Palaeolithic and Neolithic) times. Peschici
Peschici is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Foggia in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. Famous for its seaside resorts, its territory belongs to the Gargano National Park and to the Gargano Mountain Community. Geography Peschici is situated on the north-eastern coast of Gargano promontory, east of San Menaio, from Rodi Garganico, and west of Vieste. The town sits over a karst spur facing the sea, with a height of more than ; the territory features a number of coastal watch towers. Carpino
Carpino ( Pugliese: ) is a coastal town and ''comune'' of the Italian region of Apulia, lying on the Gargano peninsula.
