Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. In ice hockey, two opposing teams use ice hockey sticks to control, advance and shoot a closed, vulcanized, rubber disc called a " puck" into the other team's goal. Each goal is worth one point. Ice Hockey Journalists UK, abbreviated to IHJUK, is an organisation which was set up in 1984 to promote the interests of ice hockey and its writers, photographers and broadcasters. Originally called the British Ice Hockey Writers Association, abbreviated to BIHWA, it changed its name in 2006 in order to reflect the change in the sport and the growth of the media covering it. IHJUK were the custodians of the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame until 2018. A sub-committee of members of IHJUK selected people who have made an "outstanding contribution" to the sport for induction to the Hall. IHJUK are also responsible for the awarding of honours to players and coaches at the end of each season. Vic Batchelder
Vic Batchelder ( – ) was a British ice hockey journalist. He is a member of the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. Early life Batchelder was working as a railway policeman in London when he began attending Wembley Lions games. He quit the police force after becoming disillusioned after a colleague suffered a violent attack. After quitting the police force he worked for a finance company. Career Vic became club secretary for the Nottingham Panthers in the early 1980s. He soon started documenting and publishing information such as match reports and stories. In September 1981 Batchelder started the ice hockey magazine, ''Ice Hockey News Review'', as a fortnightly publication. He continued to write and edit the magazine until he sold it in September 1999 due to ill-health. However, he continued to write for the magazine until his death from cancer in 2001. Glasgow Clan (formerly ''Braehead Clan'') is a Scotland, Scottish professional ice hockey team. It was formed in 2010 as the UK Elite Ice Hockey League expanded into the west of Scotland market, and are based at the Braehead Arena in Renfrewshire. The Sheffield Steelers are a professional ice hockey team located in Sheffield, England. They were formed in 1991 (see 1991 in sport) and play their home games at the Utilita Arena. They are currently a member of the Elite Ice Hockey League. The club's main (title) sponsor is Sheffield Window Centre. The Edinburgh Capitals are a Scottish ice hockey club, playing in the Scottish National League (SNL). They are based in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. The team play at the Murrayfield Ice Rink, close to Murrayfield Rugby stadium. In April 2018, a consortium led by David Hand (brother of ex-Racer Tony) won the contract for ice time at Murrayfield, effectively rendering the Capitals homeless. The newly formed Murrayfield Racers applied to join the EIHL and take the Capitals' place but were rejected, plunging the future of top level ice hockey in the city into jeopardy. The Bees Ice Hockey Club are an ice hockey team from Slough, Berkshire, UK. They compete in the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) National League, the second tier of English Ice Hockey. History Early years The Bracknell Bees were formed in 1987, under the ownership of John Nike OBE. Bees began life in the Heineken League Division Two, under the leadership of former Durham Wasps and Nottingham Panthers forward, Jamie Crapper, where they finished 6th. Nathan Craze
Nathan Craze (born 26 November 1986 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales) is a Welsh former professional ice hockey netminder. He played in the Elite Ice Hockey League for the Cardiff Devils, Belfast Giants and the Edinburgh Capitals. He also played for the Great Britain Under-18 and Under-20 national team as well as one game for the main national team. Playing career Craze began his career with the Cardiff Devils before joining the Belfast Giants in 2005. He had an impressive start with the Belfast Giants in the 2005–06 season, originally called up when both Belfast's goalies became injured. The Man of Ice Awards were founded at the end of the 2007-2008 Elite Ice Hockey League season to commend the best in British ice hockey. Categories Seven of the awards were voted for by coaches and captains of the ten Elite League teams. One Award, the Fan's Favourite, is voted for by the fans of Elite League Ice Hockey in the United Kingdom.
