Vettath J Mathai
Vettath John Mathai (25 February 1901 – 5 August 1954) also known as "The Lion of Cochin" was a lawyer, banker, politician and plantation owner. He is best known for being the first Indian to defeat a European in a democratic election in Indian history. Mathai was a MLA in the Kochi Legislative Council from 1938 to 1945 as representative of the Planters constituency. Early life Mathai was born to a Malayalee Syrian Christian Vettath family in Mulanthuruthy village within the princely state of Cochin during the height of British India. Being one of 5 sons, his father obtained a loan from an acquaintance to have Mathai and his brothers educated. With these funds, Mathai took his graduate and law degrees from Madras. Vettah (English: ''Hunt'') is a 2016 Indian Malayalam-Language Psychological crime mystery thriller film directed and co-produced by Rajesh Pillai. The film stars Kunchacko Boban, Manju Warrier, Indrajith Sukumaran and Sandhya. The script was written by Arunlal Ramachandran. Anishlal R S handles the cinematography. The director, Rajesh Pillai, died on 27 February 2016, the day after the film was released. Plot Commissioner Sreebala and Assistant Commissioner Zylex Abraham are tasked with investigating the disappearance of actress Uma Sathyamoorthi. The investigation leads to them arresting Melvin, who was classmates with Uma. During the interrogation, Melvin confesses to murdering his wife Sherin and covering it up as a drug-induced suicide to take revenge on her for cheating on him. Cochin Legislative Council
The Cochin Legislative Council was a unicameral legislative body of the Cochin State that functioned from 1925 to 1948 before the merger of Cochin and Travancore to form the Travancore-Cochin state and the Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly. Formation The Council was inaugurated in April 1925 under the Cochin Legislative Council Act of 1923 which established a 45-member legislature in Cochin comprising 30 elected and 15 nominated members. Franchise however was limited, dependent on several property and allied qualifications and besides general constituencies there were also special constituencies created to represent specific classes such as those of landlords and planters. Thomas Thomas (surgeon)
Thomas Thomas (29 August 1917 – 31 October 1998) was the first cardio-thoracic surgeon of Indian citizenship, as well as a prolific author and poet. Life He was trained by Reeve H. Betts in cardio-thoracic surgery at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. He studied at Madras Christian College, Tamil Nadu, and did his medical training at Stanley Medical College, Tamil Nadu. He was the first surgeon in South Asia to do a mitral valvulotomy. He was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship and did further medical research in London and Edinburgh. He later taught in hospitals in Karnataka, Kerala, Papua New Guinea, and Libya. A prolific writer, he funded his medical studies by writing short stories that were published in the literary magazine ''Caravan''. He wrote poetry, short stories and several novels.
