Vestey Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for members of the Vestey family, both in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. Both creations are extant as of 2010. The Vestey Baronetcy, of Bessemer House, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 21 June 1913 for William Vestey. In 1921 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Vestey (see this title for more information). The Vestey Baronetcy, of Shirley in the County of Surrey, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 27 June 1921 for Edmund Vestey. He was the younger brother of the first Baronet of the 1913 creation and the co-founder of the shipping line the Blue Star Line. As of 2010 the title is held by his grandson, the third Baronet, who succeeded his father in 2005. Baronetage Of The United Kingdom
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) James I of England, King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of Pound sterling, £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. William Vestey, 1st Baron Vestey
William Vestey, 1st Baron Vestey (21 January 1859 – 10 December 1940), was an English shipping magnate. Biography Early life William Vestey was born on 21 January 1859. He came from an old Liverpool family of traders. In 1876, at the age of seventeen, he was sent to Chicago by his father Samuel Vestey, a provisioner of Liverpool. Career He first managed a meat canning factory that was financed by his father. Together with his younger brother Edmund, he established Vestey Brothers (which later became the Vestey Group) in 1897 from a family butchery business in Liverpool. They were pioneers of refrigeration, opening a cold store in London in 1895. The Vestey brothers then went to South America in an attempt to make a fortune because the economy there was booming. They started by buying game birds and storing them in the cold stores of American companies before shipping them to Liverpool. Baron Vestey
Baron Vestey, of Kingswood in the County of Surrey, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1922 for the shipping magnate Sir William Vestey, 1st Baronet. He was the co-founder of the Blue Star Line. Vestey had already been created a baronet, of Bessémer House in the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, in 1913. , the titles are held by the fourth Baron, who succeeded his father in 2021 and is the eldest grandson of the Hon. William Vestey (who was killed in action in Italy during the Second World War in 1944), the only son of the second Baron. The current holder's father, the 3rd Baron Vestey, served as Master of the Horse from 1999 to 2018. Sir Edmund Vestey, 1st Baronet
Sir Edmund Hoyle Vestey, 1st Baronet (3 February 1866 – 18 November 1953) was an English food producer and importer and shipowner, and co-founder with his brother William of Vestey Brothers. Early life Vestey was born in Rainford, Lancashire, the fifth child of provision merchant Samuel Vestey. He was educated at the Liverpool Institute and then joined his father's firm in 1883. Career He was soon given the management of his father's corned beef cannery in Chicago. In 1890 he joined William in his new business of importing refrigerated meat from Argentina. The Union Cold Storage Company was to become one of the world's largest cold storage operations. They began to diversify into other food products and in 1906 also began importing from China. Blue Star Line
The Blue Star Line was a Merchant Navy (United Kingdom), British passenger and cargo shipping company formed in 1911, being in operation until 1998. Formation Blue Star Line was formed as an initiative by the Vestey Brothers, a Liverpool-based butchers company, who had founded the Union Cold Storage Company to take advantage of refrigeration practices. They developed a large importation business, shipping frozen meat from South America to Britain, initially from Argentina on ships of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, and other shipping lines that called at South American ports. The high prices charged for transport by these companies led the Vestey brothers to start to operate their own ships. Vestey Holdings, formerly Vestey Group and previously also known as Vestey Brothers, is a privately-owned UK group of companies comprising an international business focused mainly on food products and services. The company has owned vast holdings overseas, mainly in South America and Australia, and continues to own some. The Vestey family were estimated to be the second wealthiest family in Britain (after the King) in 1940. In 1980, it was discovered that the company had operated a tax avoidance scheme, and Vestey Brothers was the largest privately owned multinational company and the largest retailer of meat in the world in the 1980s.
