Vesta Rowing Club
Vesta Rowing Club is a rowing club based on the Tideway of the River Thames in Putney, London, England. It was founded in 1870. Vesta organises two head races every year; the Scullers Head and the Veterans Head. History Foundation Vesta Rowing Club was founded in 1870. It is said that during the club's inaugural meeting, members decided that the club should be named after the first boat to pass under London Bridge. The first boat, a steam tug, to pass under the bridge was ''Vesta''. The club's first home was Salters Boathouse which was a part of Feathers Pub on the Wandle which flows into the Tideway just west of Wandsworth Bridge. In 1875, the club moved to the Unity boathouse (now the Ranelagh Sailing Club) and from there to its present clubhouse next door in 1890. To begin with, the Vesta only raced in-house. Putney
Putney () is a district of southwest London, England, in the London Borough of Wandsworth, southwest of Charing Cross. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London. History Putney is an ancient parish which covered in the Hundred of Brixton in the county of Surrey. Its area has been reduced by the loss of Roehampton to the south-west, an offshoot hamlet that conserved more of its own clustered historic core. In 1855 the parish was included in the area of responsibility of the Metropolitan Board of Works and was grouped into the Wandsworth District. In 1889 the area was removed from Surrey and became part of the County of London. The Wandsworth District became the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth in 1900. Since 1965 Putney has formed part of the London Borough of Wandsworth in Greater London. London Fire Brigade
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is the fire and rescue service for London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It was formed by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade Act 1865, under the leadership of superintendent Eyre Massey Shaw. It has 5,992staff, including 5,096 operational firefighters and officers based at 102 fire stations (plus one river station). The 1984 National Rowing Championships was the 13th edition of the National Championships, held from 14–15 July 1984 at the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. The Championships were seriously affected by the fact that the Great Britain squad was in San Diego training for the 1984 Summer Olympics and the Junior squad was in Sweden for the World Championships. 1972 British Rowing Championships
The 1972 National Rowing Championships was the first edition of the National Championships, held from 22 to 23 July 1972 at the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. These inaugural Championships were held at the newly opened National Watersports Centre in Nottingham. The Wallingford pair of Tony Norris and Doug Richardson won the junior pair and finished second behind Mike Hart and David Maxwell in the senior pair. Hart & Maxwell would compete at the Olympics shortly afterwards. Metropolitan Regatta
The Metropolitan Regatta is an international rowing (sport), rowing regatta. It takes place on Dorney Lake, Buckinghamshire near Eton, Berkshire, Eton next to the River Thames in southern England. It attracts crews from schools, clubs, and universities from around the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. The Metropolitan Regatta was established in 1866 on the tideway through the initiative of Herbert Playford, Captain of London Rowing Club. The event's first honorary secretary was Charles Dickens, Jr. The Regatta ran until 1977 on a course between Putney and Hammersmith of a mile and three-quarters. The regatta resumed in 1980, at Thorpe Park, Surrey. It moved to Royal Albert Dock, London, Royal Albert Dock in 1988 and its current home at Dorney Lake in 2001.'' Agecroft Rowing Club is a rowing club based at Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, England. It was formerly based close to the Agecroft Hall in Pendleton north. Its current location is its third within today's City of Salford on a site close to the city centre of Manchester. History There has been rowing in Manchester and Salford since 1823, with more than 15 clubs operating during the 1860s. Agecroft R.C. was formed by the gradual merging of these River Irwell-based clubs. Agecroft R.C. was established in Oct 1861 by Ishmael Lythgoe with its first boat house in the grounds of Agecroft Hall at Pendlebury before the manor house was sold and rebuilt by the James River in Virginia, USA. Henley Women's Regatta
Henley Women's Regatta, often abbreviated to "HWR" or "Women's Henley", is a rowing regatta held at Henley-on-Thames, England. Chris Aistrop and Rosemary Mayglothling were jointly responsible for setting up the Regatta in June 1988 and Aistrop was the first chairman. It was first held in 1988, as a response to the absence of women's events at Henley Royal Regatta at that time. While Henley Royal Regatta now offers eight women's events, Women's Henley has continued to build and expand. Henley Women's Regatta now lasts three full days, and includes time trials for over-subscribed events. Henley Women's Regatta is held on the Thames River at Henley, using the same, but shortened, boomed course as Henley Royal (the shorter course is due to Environment Agency safety restrictions and the short intervals between races at HWR).
