Vertical Blue
Vertical Blue is a freediving competition which has been held annually in The Bahamas at Dean's Blue Hole since April 2008 by freediving world record holder William Trubridge. It is an AIDA International or CMAS in 2021 judged competition and has been the venue for multiple world and national records for athletes coming from countries all over the world. Description Vertical Blue is a depth competition which consists of the freediving depth disciplines of free immersion (FIM), Constant weight without fins (CNF) and Constant weight (CWT). The event is held at Dean's Blue Hole on Long Island in the Bahamas and is organized by William Trubridge with AIDA International providing judges. William Trubridge
William Trubridge (born 24 May 1980) is a New Zealand world champion and world record holding freediver. Trubridge was the first diver to go deeper than without oxygen and as of 2013 held the world record in the free immersion and constant weight without fins disciplines. Life Trubridge was born in Northumberland in northern England, but moved with his family to New Zealand when he was eighteen months old. As a diver, Trubridge mainly competes in depth disciplines. He has scored the highest number of points for an individual at the Team's World Championships, 313.3, which he achieved at the 2010 Freediving Team's World Championships held in Okinawa, Japan. Association Internationale pour le Développement de l'Apnée (AIDA) (English: ''International Association for the Development of Apnea'') is a worldwide rule- and record-keeping body for competitive breath holding events, also known as freediving. Freediving
Freediving, free-diving, free diving, breath-hold diving, or skin diving is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath-holding until resurfacing rather than the use of breathing apparatus such as scuba gear. Constant Weight Without Fins
Constant weight without fins (CNF) is an AIDA International (International Association for Development of Apnea) freediving discipline in which the freediver descends and ascends by swimming without the use of fins or without pulling on the rope or changing his ballast; only a single hold of the rope to stop the descent and to start the ascent is allowed. Constant weight without fins is the depth discipline of freediving that is most challenging, because of the physical effort needed to swim without assistance. Challenges The main differences between free diving disciplines that involve diving to depth and those that occur at the surface are: the dive cannot be interrupted, there are periods where work is performed and the diver is impacted by direct effects of pressure. Constant weight (CWT) is a freediving discipline recognised by AIDA, the International Association for the Development of Apnea, in which the freediver descends and ascends using their monofin and/or with the use of their arms without pulling on the rope or changing his ballast; only a single hold of the rope to stop the descent and start the ascent is allowed. Nicholas Mevoli
Nicholas Lawrence Mevoli III (August 22, 1981 – November 17, 2013) was an American freediver who died while attempting to set an American record at the Vertical Blue competition at Dean's Blue Hole in the Bahamas. Early life Mevoli was born in Dunedin, Florida, and lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York. He worked as a prop technician in the film and television industry in New York, including on The CW series ''Gossip Girl'' and the Comedy Central series ''Chappelle's Show''. He was also an actor, technician and writer with Rising Sun Performance Company, and starred in the 2004 independent film ''Exist''. Mevoli began free-diving competitively in early 2012. He won titles twice at the Deja Blue competition and finished third at the Caribbean Cup in Roatán, Honduras.
