Version City
Version City is an American reggae record label and recording studio. Since its inception in New York City 1997 by local ska veteran King Django, it has changed its location to its current home in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Version City has been the creative outlet of many of Django's productions, especially those backed by the loose line-up that make up the house band, the Version City Rockers. This ensemble usually includes musicians involved in the New York scene such as "Agent" Jay Nugent and Vic Ruggiero of The Slackers, Eddie Ocampo, and Ira Heaps of the Jammyland Jammyland Records was an independent music retailer in New York City. Reggae
Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, " Do the Reggay" was the first popular song to use the word "reggae", effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term ''reggae'' more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues, and evolved out of the earlier genres ska and rocksteady. King Django (born Jeffrey Baker) is an American bandleader, singer, songwriter, arranger, engineer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, especially in the genres of ska, rocksteady, reggae, Dub music, dub, dancehall, rhythm & blues and soul music, soul. Other influences in his music have included traditional jazz, Swing music, swing, klezmer, Hardcore punk, hardcore/punk rock, hip-hop and electronica. Jay Nugent
Jayson Nugent (born 1972; also known as Agent Jay, and Crazy Baldhead) is a guitarist and DJ from New York who plays in the style of several Jamaican music genres. Nugent's experiments with ska, reggae, rocksteady, dub music, and skinhead reggae came to be noticed through his work with Version City and Stubborn Records. Since 1997, Nugent has been a staple in the New York City ska community, playing backup for King Django, trading dub masters with Victor Rice, and playing in The Slackers. Other bands that featured Nugent's guitar work in the 1990s include: Agent 99, Stubborn All-Stars, Da Whole Thing, and Version City Rockers. In 2007, Nugent released the ''Crazy Baldhead Has a Posse'' CD, which he produced over a 10-year period, with guest musicians featured in every song. Vic Ruggiero
Victor "Vic" Ruggiero, (also known as Rugaroo, Bad Vic or Lord Sluggo) is a musician, songwriter and producer from New York City who has played in reggae, blues, ska and rocksteady bands since the early 1990s, including The Slackers, Stubborn All-Stars, SKAndalous All Stars, Crazy Baldhead and The Silencers (not to be confused with the Scottish rock band The Silencers). He has also performed with punk rock band Rancid, both live and in the studio. He has released four solo acoustic albums and continues to tour and record worldwide. Ruggiero is known primarily as a singer and organist, although he also plays piano, bass, banjo, cigar box guitar, guitar, harmonica and percussion. The Slackers
The Slackers are an American ska band, formed in Manhattan, New York in 1991. The band's sound is a mix of ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, soul, garage rock, and jazz. The Slackers' notability is credited to their prolific career, tours of North America, Europe, and elsewhere, and signing to notable punk label Hellcat Records. The members of the Slackers have also been known to perform in other bands and musical projects, including Reggae Workers of the World, David Hillyard & The Rocksteady Seven, Crazy Baldhead Sound System, Da Whole Thing, The Hall Trees, Stubborn All-Stars, and the SKAndalous All Stars. Jammyland
Jammyland Records was an independent music retailer in New York City. It opened in 1993 at its location on 60 E 3rd Street (Manhattan), 3rd Street in Manhattan, by owner Ira Heaps. The store specialized in Music of Jamaica, Jamaican music, specifically the ska, rocksteady and reggae genres of the 60s and 70s recorded on gramophone record, vinyl, though it also sold CDs. Jammyland also reissued more obscure reggae. The store used to have a recording studio in its basement, where artists including Victor Rice, The Slackers and the Dynamos recorded, but later an avant-garde/noise music retailer opened in the basement. As well as from its storefront, Jammyland also sold records on eBay. As of June 1, 2008, Jammyland @ 60 East 3rd Street location has been closed.
