Versailles Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
The Township of Versailles was one of the seven original townships of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania created during the first meeting of the Allegheny County Court in 1788. The other townships were Pitt (which included the village of Pittsburgh), Plum, St. Clair, Moon, Mifflin, and Elizabeth. Versailles was named for Versailles, France, in honor of the United States' French allies during the American Revolution. Versailles Township originally comprised that portion of the county lying east of the Monongahela River, south of Turtle Creek and north of the Youghiogheny River. A corner of the township broke away in 1842 to form the borough of McKeesport. The remainder split into North Versailles and South Versailles townships in 1869. McKeesport is a city in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is situated at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers and within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 17,727 as of the 2020 census. It is Allegheny County's second biggest city after Pittsburgh. History Early history David McKee emigrated from Scotland and was the first permanent white settler at the forks of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers, the site of present-day McKeesport, in 1755. Wilmerding, Pennsylvania
Wilmerding is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,190 at the 2010 census. It is located southeast of Pittsburgh. At the start of the twentieth century, it had extensive foundries and machine shops of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. Wilmerding is adjacent to the borough of Turtle Creek, which takes its name from a small stream that flows past both places. History George Westinghouse purchased land in the Turtle Creek valley in 1887 and 1888 as a site for his Westinghouse Air Brake Company and related facilities. Westinghouse then sold the land to the East Pittsburgh Improvement Company, incorporated in December 1888, to develop the site, and it began the sale of lots in June 1889. White Oak is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,862 at the 2010 census. White Oak was named for a stand of white oak trees near the original town site. History White Oak was originally part of Versailles Township (one of the original townships of Allegheny County). It wasn't until March 21, 1948, that a petition requesting the formation of White Oak Borough was submitted to the County Court. On June 24, 1948, Judge Russell H. Wall, Pennsylvania
Wall is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 580 at the 2010 census. History Wall is located at the site of a farm purchased by James Walls in 1829. The property, on the south bank of Turtle Creek, was passed to James' sons Henry and John Walls, who lived in a log cabin near the heart of present-day Wall. A station on the Pennsylvania Railroad opened in the early 1840s, which was named "Walls' Station" in honor of the Walls family. Eventually, the name of the station and the town that grew up around it was shortened to "Wall Station". Henry and John Walls sold their property to their cousin Frank Wall, an engineer on riverboats who developed the property around the station. Coulter, Pennsylvania
Coulter (also known as Coulters, formerly also Coulterville or Coultersville) is an unincorporated community in South Versailles Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The community is located along the Youghiogheny River, southeast of Pittsburgh. The community occupies land warranted in 1787 to Eli Coulter. This land was conveyed by patent in 1855 to Margaret Coulter, who laid out a village in 1858. Coultersville was a coal mining village until early in the 20th century when the local mines were depleted and closed. Coulter has a post office, with ZIP code 15028. Established in 1864 as Duncan, the post office was renamed Coultersville in 1894 and Coulters in 1900. Port Perry, Pennsylvania
Port Perry was a town along the Monongahela River near Braddock, Pennsylvania and by the mouth of Turtle Creek. It disappeared by 1945, having been gradually replaced by railroad tracks serving the nearby Edgar Thomson Steel Works. History The town was laid out in the 1790s by its founder, John Perry. On June 1, 1795, Perry advertised his "new town", citing its proximity to roads, mills and quarries, and claiming its harbor was "the best on the western waters." Zadok Cramer's ''The Navigator'' (1802) referred to the settlement as Perrystown. A later edition of the ''Navigator'' stated that the town by the mouth of Turtle Creek had "not progressed". Only eight families reportedly resided there in 1840. It was not until some fifty years after its founding that Port Perry began to develop in earnest. South Versailles Township is a township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 351 at the 2010 census. It contains the village of Coulter, also called Coulterville or Coulters. The U.S. Post Office in the village is called Coulters. History South Versailles Township was formed on September 18, 1869, by a division of old Versailles Township into the townships of North Versailles and South Versailles. In 1875, the second precinct of South Versailles separated to form a new Versailles Township, leaving South Versailles with only a small area around the villages of Coulter, Osceola (also known as Emblem), and Alpsville.
