Vernon L. Lowrance
Vernon Long "Rebel" Lowrance (April 19, 1909 – May 12, 1995) was a United States Navy officer who served as a submarine commander during World War II and later became director of the Office of Naval Intelligence. Promoted to vice admiral, he commanded Submarine Force Atlantic and then served as deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Early life and education Lowrance was born and raised in Catawba, North Carolina. He was appointed to the United States Naval Academy in 1926, graduating in 1930. Military career At the outbreak of World War II, Lowrance was in command of the submarine on the Atlantic Coast. Transferred to the Pacific theatre, he commanded ''Kingfish'' and on seven successful combat patrols. Credited with sinking 56,000 tons of Japanese shipping, Lowrance was awarded the Navy Cross and three Silver Stars. He was then given command of Submarine Division 121. Catawba, North Carolina
Catawba is a town in Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 603 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hickory–Lenoir– Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. As with the county, the name recalls the Catawba people, the indigenous people who once inhabited the area. History The Catawba Historic District, Alexander Moore Farm, Murray's Mill Historic District, and Powell–Trollinger Lime Kilns are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Catawba is located on the northeastern border of Catawba County at (35.709853, -81.075734). Its northeastern boundary is the shore of the Catawba River in Lake Norman. North Carolina Highway 10 passes through the center of the town, leading north to Exit 138 on Interstate 40 and southwest to Newton. United States Naval Academy Alumni
The United States Naval Academy (USNA) is an undergraduate college in Annapolis, Maryland with the mission of educating and commissioning officers for the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The Academy was founded in 1845 and graduated its first class in 1846. The Academy is often referred to as Annapolis, while sports media refer to the Academy as "Navy" and the students as "Midshipmen"; this usage is officially endorsed. During the latter half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, the United States Naval Academy was the primary source of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps officers, with the Class of 1881 being the first to provide officers to the Marine Corps. United States Naval Academy Cemetery
The United States Naval Academy Cemetery and Columbarium is a cemetery at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. History In 1868 the Naval Academy purchased a 67-acre piece of land called Strawberry Hill as part of their efforts to expand after the American Civil War. Within a year of its acquisition part of the property became the cemetery. Since its beginning the cemetery has become the final resting place for Medal of Honor recipients, Superintendents of the Naval Academy, Midshipmen, and former employees of the Academy and hundreds more of the nation's veterans. The cemetery is also home to monuments that do not mark remains, but commemorate the heroism of individuals who gave their life in service to their country. The Jeannette Monument, erected in 1890, is the most notable such monument. It was built in memory of the men who lost their lives in the Jeannette Arctic Expedition.
