Vernon Islands
Vernon Islands, also known as the Potinga Islands, is an island group in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the Clarence Strait about north-east of the territory capital of Darwin. The group consists of three islands which were first sighted by Europeans in 1818 on a British navy ship under the command of Phillip Parker King. The group were part of the subject of a successful aboriginal land claim which was resolved after 40 years in 2018 when the Tiwi people received title. All three islands host navigation aids which assist vessels passing through the Clarence Strait. It and some adjoining seabed have had protected area status since 1974 and which has been known as the Vernon Islands Conservation Reserve since 1979. __NOTOC__ Vernon Islands is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located over land and water in the Clarence Strait including the Vernon Islands and which is located about north-east of the territory capital of Darwin. The locality is bounded as follows: # The southern boundary and part of the eastern boundary is formed by the coastline of the mainland from Gunn Point in the west to Cape Hotham in the east, # The eastern boundary across the strait is a line from Cape Hotham running towards Muranapi Point on Melville Island, # The northern boundary is a contour located south of the coastline of Melville Island and # The western boundary is a line from Red Cliffe on Melville Island that runs towards Lee Point on the mainland and which intersects with a line running west from Gunn Point thereby enclosing a portion of the waters of the Beagle Gulf. Vernon Islands Conservation Reserve
__NOTOC__ Vernon Islands Conservation Reserve is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the locality of Vernon Islands about north-east of the territory capital of Darwin. The conservation reserve consists of the Vernon Islands, an island group consisting of three islands - East Vernon Island, Northwest Vernon Island and Southwest Vernon Island, and a nearby reef known as Knight Reef which is exposed at low tide. The conservation reserve first acquired protected area status as a crown reserve declared under section 103 of the ''Crown Lands Ordinance'' on 30 April 1974 by the Australian government. In 1979, the crown reserve was renamed under the ''Territory Parks and Conservation Act'' as the ''Vernon Islands Conservation Reserve''. The conservation reserve’s legal status has been effectively put aside because the land under protection was the subject of a claim lodged in 1978 under the ''Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976''. ...
