Vermorel was a French engineering businessLinz, Schrader: ''Die Internationale Automobil-Enzyklopädie.'' that existed between 1850 and 1965: for more than a century, until the death in 1957 of Édouard Vermorel, it was a family-run business. The company presented its first automobile in 1899, but waited for some years before becoming a regular automobile producer. Between 1908 and 1930 Vermorel was noteworthy as an automobile manufacturer, and commercial vehicle production continued till 1932. Origins The origins of Vermorel go back at least to the business set up in 1843 by Antoine Vermorel in a small village called Beauregard, in the countryside up-river of Lyon. Rolland-Pilain was a French car maker formally established on 4 November 1905 at 95, rue Victor-Hugo in Tours by François Rolland and Émile Pilain. The partners Rolland was already a successful businessman locally who had made a fortune in the wine business. Émile Pilain had a more technical background, having been trained by his uncle, François Pilain, who had relocated to Lyon and himself established the Société des Automobiles Pilain (SAP). Emile, the nephew, had remained in the Tours area, however. Building the business The partners started by repairing and selling motor vehicle, before they started producing their own cars, which appeared only in 1907. The torpedo body style was a type of automobile body used from 1908 until the mid-1930s, which had a streamlined profile and a folding or detachable soft top. The design consists of a hood or bonnet line raised to be level with the car's waistline, resulting in a straight beltline from front to back. A T-head engine is an early type of internal combustion engine that became obsolete after World War I. It is a sidevalve engine that is distinguished from the much more common L-head by its placement of the valves. The intake valves are on one side of the engine block and the exhaust valves on the other.
