Biography Born in Dijon in 1718, the eldest son of Charles Gravier, Lord of Vergennes, he became a chief counselor in the Court of Auditors of Burgundy in 1738 and then President of the Court in 1742. As the eldest son, he inherited his family's estates. He was named as the French King's ambassador in Switzerland from 1775 to 1777. Vergennes is a village in Jackson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 298 at the 2010 census, down from 491 at the 2000 census. On February 28, 2017, a strong tornado, possibly the same as the one that struck Perryville, Missouri, narrowly missed the center of town, though no fatalities occurred. Geography Vergennes is located in northern Jackson County at (37.903152, -89.340111). Illinois Route 13 runs through the east side of the village, leading north to Pinckneyville and south to Murphysboro, the Jackson county seat. Vergennes is a city located in the northwest quadrant of Addison County, Vermont, United States. The municipality is bordered by the towns of Ferrisburgh, Panton, and Waltham. As of the 2020 census, its population was 2,553. It is the smallest of Vermont's 10 cities in terms of population, though the city of Winooski covers a smaller area. It was the first city chartered in the state of Vermont. History Vergennes was settled in 1766 by Donald MacIntosh. It was established as a city in 1788, the only one in Vermont not to have been first chartered as a town or independent village. Instead, intersecting portions of the pre-existing towns of New Haven, Panton, and Ferrisburg at the Otter Creek Falls were combined to form Vergennes. Vergennes Township is a civil township of Kent County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the township population was 4,189. It is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is located about east of the city of Grand Rapids. Communities *Fallasburg is an unincorporated community on the eastern side of the township. It began around a grist mill built by J. Wesley Fallas in 1839. It had a post office from 1851 until 1901.
