Vergara, Uruguay
Vergara is a small city in the Treinta y Tres Department of eastern Uruguay. Geography It is located between Route 18, which passes to the northwest, and on Route 91, which passes to the southeast, and about northeast of Treinta y Tres, the capital city of the department. The stream Arroyo Parao flows along the northeast limits of the town. History On 10 March 1903, the group of houses here was declared a "Pueblo" (village) by the Act of Ley Nº 2.788. On 13 December 1994, its status was elevated to "Ciudad" (city) by the Act of Ley Nº 16.668 Population In 2011, Vergara had a population of 3,810. Uruguay consists of 19 departments (''departamentos''). Each department has a legislature called a Departmental Board. The '' Intendente'' is the department's chief executive. History The first division of the Republic into six departments occurred on 27 January 1816. In February of the same year, two more departments were formed, and in 1828 one more was added. When the First Constitution was signed in 1830, there were nine departments. These were the departments of Montevideo, Maldonado, Canelones, San José, Colonia, Soriano, Paysandú, Durazno and Cerro Largo. At that time, the department of Paysandú occupied all the territory north of the RÃo Negro, which included the current departments of Artigas, Rivera, Tacuarembó, Salto, Paysandú and RÃo Negro. Uruguay's calling code is +598. Since 2010, national long distance calling was eliminated, thus there are no area codes in each city. Landline telephony ANTEL (Spanish abbreviation for National Administration of Telecommunications) is Uruguay's state-owned company for telecommunications. Previously in Uruguay, phone numbers used to have between 4 and 7 digits. To make a local phone call, you only had to dial those digits. To make a call between two cities from different departments, you had to dial zero, plus area code, plus phone number. As from August 29, 2010, all phone numbers have 8 digits, according to the new National Numbering Plan. Zero prior to area code was eliminated. Treinta y Tres () is a department of Uruguay. Its capital is Treinta y Tres. It is located in the east of the country, bordering the departments of Cerro Largo to the north, Durazno and Florida to the west, Lavalleja and Rocha to the south, while to its east is the lake Laguna MerÃn separating it from the southernmost end of Brazil. History When the First Constitution of Uruguay was signed in 1830, the territory of this department was mostly part of Cerro Largo, one of the nine original departments of the Republic. Treinta y Tres () is the capital city of the Treinta y Tres Department in eastern Uruguay. Location The city is located on Route 8, on the north banks of Olimar Grande River. The city is almost surrounded by a populated rural area, a zone of ''chacras'' (ranches), known as Ejido de Treinta y Tres. History Its name means "Thirty Three" and refers to the 19th-century national heroes, the 33 Orientales, who established the independence of Uruguay. Coincidentally, the city is located near the 33°S line of latitude, making the name doubly appropriate.
