Vere Egerton Cotton
Colonel Vere Egerton Cotton C.B.E. (1882–1970) was a British Army officer and politician who served as Lord Mayor of Liverpool. Biography Cotton was born in London 5 May 1882 and was the youngest son of Charles Calveley Cotton. Colonel Cotton was educated at Repton School and Magdalene College, Cambridge where he was an exhibitioner in 1910. He was a senior partner in Rathbone Brothers and Company, merchants in Liverpool.Liverpool Echo 12 March 1951 p.3 1951 Cotton was commissioned in the 4th West Lancashire Brigade and during WW1 he served in France, Belgium and Italy. He was made an Officer of the British Empire in the 1919 New Year honours, awarded the Croix de Guerre and Croce di Guerra and held the Territorial Decoration. Harry Dixon Longbottom
The Reverend Harry Dixon Longbottom (1886–1962) was a British Baptist Minister and politician who served as Lord Mayor of Liverpool. Biography Longbottom was born in Yorkshire in 1886. He was elected to Liverpool City Council on 1 December 1925 as Conservative Protestant for Breckfield Ward. In 1926 he lost his seat by only 46 votes but regained a council place for St. Domingo ward on 31 October 1930. He stood as a Liverpool Protestant candidate unsuccessfully for Kirkdale in the 1931 general election. He tried again unsuccessfully in 1935. He was elected as an Alderman in 1935. He served as Lord Mayor of Liverpool from 1950-51. Aigburth () is a suburb of Liverpool, England. Located to the south of the city, it is bordered by Dingle, Garston, Mossley Hill, and Toxteth. Etymology The name Aigburth comes from Old Norse ''eik'' and ''berg'', meaning ''oak-tree hill''. The name can be interpreted as "hill where oak trees grow" and is a hybrid place-name: the first part of the name is from Old Norse ''eik'' meaning "oak tree" (which is found in Eikton in Cumbria and Eakring in Nottinghamshire) and Old English ''beorg'' or ''berg'' meaning ''hill'' but as there is no real hill in Aigburth the sense here is more likely to be ''rising ground''. Beorg or berg is more usually rendered ''-borough'' (as in Barlborough in Derbyshire) or more rarely as ''-barrow'' (as in Backbarrow in Cumbria). Liverpool City Council elections will be held every four years from 2023. Between 1973 and 2021 elections were generally held three years out of every four, with a third of the council being elected each time. Henry Egerton Cotton
Henry Egerton Cotton (21 July 1929 – 1993), (also known as Henry E. Cotton) served as Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside from 1989 to 1993. He was also the First Chancellor of Liverpool John Moores University, serving in office from 1992 until his death in 1993. Personal life Henry Cotton was the son of Colonel Vere Egerton Cotton and his wife Elfreda (née Moore). On 18 June 1955, he married Elizabeth Peard, daughter of Clifford James Peard, DSO, JP.
