Ukrainian folk music includes a number of varieties of traditional, folkloric, folk-inspired popular music, and folk-inspired European classical music traditions. In the 20th century numerous ethnographic and folkloric musical ensembles were established in Ukraine and gained popularity. During the Soviet era, music was a controlled commodity and was used as a tool for the indoctrination of the population. Myroslav Mykhailovych Skoryk ( uk, Мирослав Михайлович Скорик; 13 July 1938 – 1 June 2020) was a Ukrainian composer and teacher. His music is contemporary in style and contains idioms from diverse sources including German, Welsh, English, and Eastern European artistic traditions. Skoryk was awarded the titles People's Artist of Ukraine and Hero of Ukraine. Early life Myroslav Skoryk was born in Lviv, Ukraine, then a part of Poland on 13 July 1938. His parents were both educated in Austria at the University of Vienna and subsequently became educators. His father was a historian and an ethnographer, while his mother was a chemist. A Hawk And A Hacksaw
A Hawk and a Hacksaw is an American folk duo from Albuquerque, New Mexico, currently signed to L.M. Duplication. The band consists of accordionist Jeremy Barnes, who was previously the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel and Bablicon, and violinist Heather Trost. The music is inspired by Eastern European, Turkish and Balkan traditions, and is mostly instrumental. They have released six albums and have toured internationally. The first four albums and an EP were released on The Leaf Label and afterwards on their own label L. M. Duplication. Career While Barnes lived in Chicago, he found himself in a Ukrainian area with many people from Eastern Europe and began to develop an interest in Romanian folk music. It is a concept album which is written as a retrospective soundtrack for the 1964 movie ''Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors'' by Sergei Parajanov. Background The album is a concept album, it is arranged as a soundtrack for an already existing movie. Eight tracks are Eastern Europe folk songs from Hungary, Ukraine and Romania which are partly sampled from the movie and newly interpreted and arranged by Barnes and Trost. They also composed new music for the movie and played live along the movie in cinemas and theatres in 2012. The Veryovka Ukrainian Folk Choir
The Veryovka Ukrainian Folk Choir (Національний заслужений академічний український народний хор України імені Григорія Верьовки) is a professional Ukrainian ensemble founded in 1943. The choir was founded in 1943 in Kharkiv to promote and spread Ukrainian folk music and dance traditions. The initiator and the first leader of the choir was Hryhoriy Veryovka, researcher and choir conductor. The choir represented Ukrainian art in the cities of the USSR, Romania (1952, 1956), Poland (1953), Finland (1954), Belgium and Luxembourg (1958), Germany (1959), Yugoslavia (1962) and other countries. In honor of its founder, the choir was named after him in 1965. In the same year, the team was headed by Anatoly Avdievsky. Sergei Parajanov, ka, სერგო ფარაჯანოვი, uk, Сергій Параджанов (January 9, 1924 – July 20, 1990) was an Armenian filmmaker. Parajanov is regarded by film critics, film historians and filmmakers to be one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers in cinema history. He invented his own cinematic style, which was out of step with the guiding principles of socialist realism; the only sanctioned art style in the USSR. This, combined with his lifestyle and behaviour, led Soviet authorities to repeatedly persecute and imprison him, and suppress his films. Folk metal is a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s.
