The Verband der Zoologischen Gärten ("Association of Zoological Gardens"; VdZ), until 2014 Verband Deutscher Zoodirektoren (German Federation of Zoo Directors, VDZ), is the leading association of scientifically managed zoological gardens in German-speaking countries. A zoo is considered to be scientifically managed if it is run by a director with an academic education, usually a biologist or a veterinarian, and if he or she follows and implements scientific standards of zoology, conservation, and zoo pedagogy. ''Alpenzoo Innsbruck'' is a zoo located in the town Insbruck, in the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is one of the highest elevation zoos in Europe. General Founded 22 September 1962 by the Austrian zoologist Hans Psenner, Alpenzoo became famous because of reintroduction of endangered species like the bearded vulture, Alpine ibex, and northern bald ibis in the wild. The zoo is a non-profit association, and the majority of their funding comes from the entrance fees, but the zoo receives additional funds from the city of Innsbruck and the government of Tyrol. ZOOM Erlebniswelt Gelsenkirchen, founded on April 14, 1949, as "Ruhr-Zoo", is one of the most modern zoological gardens in Germany. It was founded on a heavily bomb, shelled area in Gelsenkirchen adjacent to a port on the Rhine–Herne Canal. It initially encompassed 15.5 hectares. During its first years, there was a large turnover of animals as an animal trader provided them. Today the park is owned by the city of Gelsenkirchen via GEW – Gesellschaft für Energie und Wirtschaft mbH (society for energy and business), a holding of municipally owned concerns. After 2004 the park was enlarged to the present size. It is incredibly well known for its panoramas and cultural approach. The Opel Zoo (german: von Opel Hessische Zoostiftung) is a zoo in Königstein im Taunus, Hesse in Germany. The Zoo was founded in 1956 by Georg von Opel, and covers . 1,600 animals from 200 species live in the Zoo, including african elephants. Elephants Opel Zoo is the one-of-a-kind Zoo in Hesse which keeps elephants. The first import of African elephants was in 1955. They were two males, Vauka and Conti, and one female, Opeline. Vauka sired two calves with Opeline: Afrika born 1965, and the bull Afrikano 1968. Like all bull elephants, Conti and Vauka became more and more aggressive, and they were euthanized in 1971 and 1977, respectively. The female Aruba, born in 1979 in Zimbabwe, was bought in 1981. The Tierpark Hagenbeck is a zoo in Stellingen, Hamburg, Germany. The collection began in 1863 with animals that belonged to Carl Hagenbeck Sr. (1810–1887), a fishmonger who became an amateur animal collector.
