Velesunio Ambiguus
''Velesunio ambiguus'', the floodplain mussel, or the billabong mussel (South Australia), is a species of freshwater bivalve in the family Hyriidae. There are four other cryptic species in the genus '' Velesunio'' (which all look similar to ''Velesunio ambiguus'') in Australia. Distribution Australia: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, where it is known as the billabong mussel. Biotope Static waters. Life cycle The lifespan of this mussel is over 20 years. It can survive temperatures from around 4 °C to over 30 °C. Human uses ''Velesunio ambiguus'' serves as a food for Australian Aborigines, although its flesh is tough. This species can also be used in fish ponds to filter microscopic algae Algae (; singular alga ) is an informal term for a large and diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms. Mussel
Mussel () is the common name used for members of several families of bivalve molluscs, from saltwater and Freshwater bivalve, freshwater habitats. These groups have in common a shell whose outline is elongated and asymmetrical compared with other edible clams, which are often more or less rounded or oval. The word "mussel" is frequently used to mean the bivalves of the marine family Mytilidae, most of which live on exposed shores in the intertidal zone, attached by means of their strong Byssus, byssal threads ("beard") to a firm substrate. A few species (in the genus ''Bathymodiolus'') have colonised hydrothermal vents associated with deep ocean ridges. In most marine mussels the shell is longer than it is wide, being wedge-shaped or asymmetrical. The external colour of the shell is often dark blue, blackish, or brown, while the interior is silvery and somewhat nacreous. The common name "mussel" is also used for many freshwater bivalves, including the freshwater pearl mussels. F ...

Hyriidae
Hyriidae is a taxonomic family of pearly freshwater mussels, aquatic bivalve molluscs in the order Unionida. This family is native to South America, Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea. Like all members of that order, they go through a larval stage that is parasitic on fish (see glochidium). The classification recognized by Banarescu (1995) uses three subfamilies. This family contains eighteen genera. Sediment-dwelling Organism
Fauna is all of the animal life present in a particular region or time. The corresponding term for plants is ''flora'', and for fungi, it is ''funga''. Flora, fauna, funga and other forms of life are collectively referred to as '' biota''. Zoologists and paleontologists use ''fauna'' to refer to a typical collection of animals found in a specific time or place, e.g. the "Sonoran Desert fauna" or the "Burgess Shale fauna". Paleontologists sometimes refer to a sequence of faunal stages, which is a series of rocks all containing similar fossils. The study of animals of a particular region is called faunistics. Etymology ''Fauna'' comes from the name Fauna, a Roman goddess of earth and fertility, the Roman god Faunus, and the related forest spirits called Fauns. All three words are cognates of the name of the Greek god Pan, and ''panis'' is the Greek equivalent of fauna. ''Fauna'' is also the word for a book that catalogues the animals in such a manner. The term was first used by ...

Billabong
Billabong ( ) is an Australian term for an oxbow lake, an isolated pond left behind after a river changes course. Billabongs are usually formed when the path of a creek or river changes, leaving the former branch with a dead end. As a result of the arid Australian climate in which these "dead rivers" are often found, billabongs fill with water seasonally but can be dry for a greater part of the year. Etymology The etymology of the word ''billabong'' is disputed. The word is most likely derived from the Wiradjuri term ''bilabaŋ'', which means "a watercourse that runs only after rain". It is derived from ''bila'', meaning "river", It may have been combined with ''bong'' or ''bung'', meaning "dead". One source, however, claims that the term is of Scottish Gaelic origin. Billabongs were significant because they held water longer than parts of rivers; it was important for people to identify and name these areas.

Velesunio Wilsonii
''Velesunio wilsonii'' is a species of freshwater mussel endemic to Australia and comes from the Hyriidae family (phylum: Mollusca). ''Velesunio wilsonii'' mussels have a thick, dark shell that are sometimes flaky and mostly closed. ''Velesunio wilsonii'' have a fleshy foot that sometimes extends outside of the valves. The shell of the ''Velesunio wilsonii'' varies from oblong to a symmetrical circle. ''Velesunio wilsonii'' size ranges from 40 mm to 120 mm. Biology and ecology Reproduction in ''Velesunio'' ''wilsonii'' generally involves the male mussels releasing sperm that females take up to fertilize their eggs. Once fertilized, the embryos develop within the females’ gills. These develop into larvae (glochidia), which then attach to the gills or fins of native fish, acting parasitic. They remain attached to the fish by hooks until they have metamorphosed into juvenile mussels with siphon structures that allow them to feed. ''Velesunio'' ''wilsonii'' siphon water i ...
