Vearne C. Babcock
Vearne Clifton Babcock (28 April 1887 - 15 February 1972) was an American aeronautical engineer and aircraft designer in the first half of the twentieth century. He was one of the 598 aviators who were members of the Early Birds of Aviation. Biography He was born at Benton Harbor, Michigan on 28 April 1887. An energetic young man, Babcock worked as a jockey around the turn of the century. ''The Times'' of Philadelphia reported that Vearne C. Babcock would ride in the first race, six furlongs, at Delmar Park, St. Louis, Missouri, on 22 October 1901. The ''Buffalo Express'' carried results the following day of the races held 5 June 1902 at the Saint Louis fairground, in which Terra Incognita was ridden to a fourth-place finish by Babcock in the sixth race of the day, over a course of one mile, 70 yards. Gallery The Early Birds of Aviation is an organization devoted to the history of early pilots. The organization was started in 1928 and accepted a membership of 598 pioneering aviators. Membership was limited to those who piloted a glider (aircraft), glider, gas balloon, or airplane, prior to December 17, 1916, covering the entirety of the Aviation in the pioneer era, pioneer era of aviation, and just over two years into Aviation in World War I, World War I. The cutoff date was set at December 17 to correspond to the first flights of Wilbur WWilbur and Orville Wright. 1916 was chosen as a cutoff because a large number of people were trained in 1917 as pilots for World War I. Airco DH
The Aircraft Manufacturing Company Limited (Airco) was an early United Kingdom, British aircraft manufacturer. Established during 1912, it grew rapidly during the First World War, referring to itself as the largest aircraft company in the world by 1918. Airco produced many thousands of aircraft for both the British and Allied military air wings throughout the war, including fighter aircraft, fighters, trainer aircraft, trainers and medium bomber, bombers. The majority of the company's aircraft were designed in-house by Airco's chief designer Geoffrey de Havilland. Airco established the first airline in the United Kingdom, Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited, which operated as a subsidiary of Airco. Babcock Airplane Corporation
The Babcock Airplane Corporation was a short-lived aviation company from 1939 to 1945, located in DeLand, Florida. History "The Babcock Aircraft corporation was incorporated May 12, 1939, under laws of the state of Florida with an authorized capitalization of $150,000. It is wholly a Florida company, according to Maj. red L.Foster, owned and operated by Florida people." Foster was president while Vearne C. Babcock was vice-president and chief engineer. ''The Daytona Beach Morning Journal'' reported on 11 June 1940 that DeLand Mayor A. C. Hatch cut the ribbon attached to fuselage machinery signifying the start of production at the new facility on 10 June. __NOTOC__ The Bartlett LC-13A Zephyr 150 was a United States light civil aircraft built in the 1940s. It was a mid-wing braced monoplane of conventional design with side-by-side seating for two and fixed, Conventional landing gear, tailwheel undercarriage. It was originally marketed as the Babcock LC-13 by its original manufacturer, then as the Taubman LC-13 when the Babcock Airplane Corporation was acquired by Taubman Aircraft. The rights were finally acquired by Bartlett Aircraft in 1941 in aviation, 1941, but plans to mass-produce it were halted by the outbreak of World War II. The Ford Reliability Tour, properly called "The National Air Tour for the Edsel B. Ford Reliability Trophy", was a series of aerial tours sponsored in part by Ford from 1925 to 1931 and re-created in 2003. Top prize was the Edsel Ford Reliability Trophy. Henry and Edsel Ford were shareholders in the Stout Engineering Company. In August 1925, they purchased the entire company, making it the Stout Metal Airplane Division of the Ford Motor Company. Their product, the Stout 2-AT Pullman, was a featured plane. The plane was also used by their new airline the Ford Air Transport Service, which started regular flights in April.
