Vazhinka River
The Vazhinka () is a river in Prionezhsky and Pryazhinsky Districts of the Republic of Karelia and in Podporozhsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, a right tributary of the Svir. The urban-type settlement of Vazhiny is located in its mouth. It is long, and the area of its basin . The principal tributary of the Vazhinka is the Muzhala (left). The source of the Vazhinka is located in the western part of Prionezhsky District. The river flows south, enters Pryazhinsky District, accepts the Tuksha from the right, and enters Leningrad Oblast. In the Republic of Karelia, the valley of the Vazhinka is almost unpopulated, with the exception of villages Verkhniye Vazhiny and Kashkany. Svir
The Svir (, Veps: , Karelian/Finnish: ) is a river in Podporozhsky, Lodeynopolsky, and Volkhovsky districts in the north-east of Leningrad Oblast, Russia. It flows westwards from Lake Onega to Lake Ladoga, thus connecting the two largest lakes of Europe. It is the largest river flowing into Lake Ladoga. The length of the Svir is , whereas the area of its drainage basin is . The towns of Podporozhye and Lodeynoye Pole, as well as urban-type settlements Voznesenye, Nikolsky, Vazhiny, and Svirstroy are located at the banks of the Svir. After Peter the Great connected the Svir with the Neva by the Ladoga Canal in the 18th century, the river has been part of the Mariinsk Canal System, currently the Volga–Baltic Waterway. A drainage basin is an area of land where all flowing surface water converges to a single point, such as a river mouth, or flows into another body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Vazhiny
Vazhiny (russian: Важины) is an urban locality (an urban-type settlement) in Podporozhsky District of Leningrad Oblast, Russia, located on the right bank of the Svir River at the mouth of the Vazhinka River, several kilometers northwest of the town of Podporozhye. Municipally, it is incorporated as Vazhinskoye Urban Settlement, one of the four urban settlements in the district. Population: History Vazhiny was first mentioned in the 16th century as Vazhinsky Pogostm a settlement of Novgorodians. The area was relatively unpopulated until the 18th century, when the Mariinsky Canal System, which included the Svir River, was opened. In the 19th century, the extensive timber logging started, and the selo of Vazhiny was formally established in 1900, to serve logging, timber trade, and timber transport along the Svir. Podporozhsky District (russian: Подпоро́жский райо́н) is an administrativeOblast Law #32-oz and municipalLaw #51-oz district (raion), one of the seventeen in Leningrad Oblast, Russia.
