Vaucluse Mill Village Historic District
The Vaucluse Historic District, located in Vaucluse, South Carolina in Aiken County. The district includes the mill, number of accompanying buildings, and over eighty mill village homes. The district is noteworthy in that it is considered to be oldest mill village in the state. No less significant, the mill building, completed in 1877, was based on the plans of engineers A. D. Lockwood & Company of Providence, Rhode Island. The Lockwood successor firm, Lockwood, Greene & Company, would later design around fifty of South Carolina's textile manufacturing facilities. Vaucluse, South Carolina
Vaucluse is an unincorporated community in Aiken County in the U.S. state of South Carolina. Vaucluse is part of the Augusta, Georgia metropolitan area. History Three miles from Graniteville and from Aiken, Vaucluse is the site of the pioneering Horse Creek Valley textile mill. Employing 50 'operatives' on 1500 spindles and 25 looms, the mill was incorporated by local planter Christian Breithaupt in 1833, with later investors George McDuffie, John Bauskett, and William Gregg. Gregg found it under-capitalized and too small for economic survival, producing an unmanageable variety of products, and suffering due to a lack of active management. As such it served Gregg as a training ground for his successful Graniteville project of 1847. Aiken County is a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 Census, its population was 168,808. Its county seat and largest city is Aiken. Aiken County is a part of the Augusta-Richmond County, GA-SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lockwood, Greene & Company was an American engineering firm. It was active under various names from 1871 to 2017. History Lockwood, Greene & Company The firm that would become Lockwood, Greene & Company was established in 1871 in Boston as the mechanical engineering practice of Amos D. Lockwood. Lockwood, a native of Rhode Island, was self-trained in mechanical engineering and had extensive experience managing textile manufacturing and construction operations. Extenuating circumstances obligated him to move his residence to Providence in 1873 to manage his manufacturing interests.
