Vatche Housepian
Vache Artashesi Hovsepyan ( hy, Վաչե Արտաշեսի Հովսեփյան, sometimes credited as Vatche Hovsepian; 17 September 1925 – 1 December 1978) was an Armenian duduk player and renowned popular artist. He graduated from the Yerevan Conservatory in the name of Romanos Melikyan in 1951. He had started performing as a popular musician on Yerevan radio in 1945 in Armenian popular and folk music. He has composed music for songs like «Էստոնական Երգ» (lyrics by Vahan Terian), «Իրիկնաժամին» (lyrics by Silva Kaputikyan) and «Երեքնուկ» (lyrics by Paruyr Sevak) and others. He also toured in live performances in Armenia, the Soviet Union and worldwide. With Andranik Askarian, he performed the duduk parts on "The Feeling Begins", the opening track of Peter Gabriel's '' Passion'', the soundtrack album from Martin Scorsese's film '' The Last Temptation of Christ''. Duduk
The duduk ( ; hy, դուդուկ ) or tsiranapogh ( hy, ծիրանափող, meaning “apricot-made wind instrument”), is an ancient Armenian double reed woodwind instrument made of apricot wood. It is indigenous to Armenia. Variations of the Armenian duduk appear throughout the Caucasus and the Middle East, including Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia, Turkey, and Iran. Duduk, Balaban, and Mey are almost identical, except for historical and geographical differences. It is commonly played in pairs: while the first player plays the melody, the second plays a steady drone called ''dum'', and the sound of the two instruments together creates a richer, more haunting sound. The unflattened reed and cylindrical body produce a sound closer to the English horn than the oboe or bassoon. Unlike other double reed instruments like the oboe or shawm, the duduk has a very large reed proportional to its size. Vahan Terian
Vahan Terian (; February 9, 1885 – January 7, 1920) was an Armenian poet, lyrist and public activist. He is known for his sorrowful, romantic poems, the most famous of which are still read and sung in their musical versions. Biography Terian was born in the Gandza village (განძანი) of Javakheti region of Georgia (then in Russian Empire). Schooled in Tiflis, he then studied at the Lazarian College in Moscow, where he was exposed to symbolism and joined the Russian Social Democrats. He was jailed by Czarist police for his political activity. He is mostly known for his poems dedicated to autumn and love. That's why Teryan is known as "Singer of Autumn" in Literature. He published his first book of poems, "Dreams at Dusk", in 1908, which made him an immediate sensation, Hovhannes Tumanian calling him the most original lyric poet of his age. Silva Kaputikyan
Silva Kaputikyan ( hy, ) (20 January 1919 – 25 August 2006) was an Armenian poet and political activist. One of the best-known Armenian writers of the twentieth century, she is recognized as "the leading poetess of Armenia" and "the grand lady of twentieth century Armenian poetry". Although a member of the Communist Party, she was a noted advocate of Armenian national causes. Her first collection of poems were published in the mid-1940s. By the 1950s she had established herself as a significant literary figure in Soviet Armenia. Besides Armenian she also wrote in Russian and many of her works were translated to other languages. In the later Soviet period she frequently addressed political and other issues.
