Vassilis Lipiridis
Vassilis Lipiridis (alternate spellings: Vasilis, Lypiridis) ( el, Βασίλης Λυπηρίδης; born January 1, 1967, in Edessa, Greece) is a retired Greek professional basketball player. At 2.02 m (6 ft 7 in) tall, he played at the power forward position. Professional career Lipridis started his basketball playing career with the youth clubs of Edessaikos. He spent one season with HAN Thessaloniki, during the 1984–85 season. Lipiridis played with great success as a defensive power forward with Aris, winning with them, the Greek League championship six times (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991) and the Greek Cup 5 times (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992). He also took part in 3 consecutive EuroLeague Final Fours of the FIBA European Champions Cup: Ghent 1988, Munich 1989, and Zaragoza 1990. Edessa
Edessa (; grc, Ἔδεσσα, Édessa) was an ancient city (''polis'') in Upper Mesopotamia, founded during the Hellenistic period by King Seleucus I Nicator (), founder of the Seleucid Empire. European Professional Club Basketball System
Professional basketball clubs in Europe can compete in a number of different competitions, including national leagues, regional (multi-national) leagues, and continental competitions. It is therefore possible for clubs from some countries to take part in several levels of competition in the same season. HANTH (Greek: ΧΑΝΘ), or HAN Thessaloniki (ΧΑΝ Θεσσαλονίκης), is a Christian youth development organisation that is based in Thessaloniki, Greece, and which comprises the homonymous Greek multi-sport club. The multi-sports club was founded in 1921, and has teams in basketball (founded 1919), volleyball, handball, water polo, and others sports. HAN Thessaloniki is a part of the YMCA in Thessaloniki, which is a Christian universal welfare movement. The 1991 FIBA European Championship, commonly called FIBA EuroBasket 1991, was the 27th FIBA EuroBasket regional basketball championship, held by FIBA Europe. It was held in Italy between 24 and 29 June 1991. Eight national teams entered the event under the auspices of FIBA Europe, the sport's regional governing body. The Palazzo dello Sport in Rome was the hosting venue of the tournament. Yugoslavia won its fifth FIBA European title by defeating hosts Italy with an 88–73 score in the final. The 1990 FIBA World Championship was the 11th FIBA World Championship, the international basketball world championship for men's teams. It was hosted by Argentina from 8 to 19 August 1990. The final phase of the competition was held at the Luna Park, Buenos Aires. Yugoslavia emerged as the tournament winner. This was the last World Championship in which the country participated before its dissolution. Likewise, the Soviet Union participated in its final tournament before its dissolution. Greek National Basketball Team
The Greece men's national basketball team ( el, Eθνική Oμάδα Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ελλάδος) represents Greece in international basketball. They are controlled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Greece. Greece is currently ranked ninth in the FIBA World Rankings. Greece appeared eight times at the FIBA World Cup, their best performance coming in 2006 as runners-up, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semi-final. Greece took part the in the EuroBasket 28 times, winning the tournament twice; while also coming away with one silver ( 1989) as well as two bronze medals (1949, 2009).
