Vasily Sedlyar
Vasily Teofanovych Sedlyar (Ukrainian: Васи́ль Теофанович Седля́р: 12 April 1899, Khristyvka, Shyshaky Raion — 13 July 1937, Kiev) was a Ukrainian painter, illustrator and art teacher; executed in the Great Purge. He was also known for his ceramic and faience work. Biography He was born to a peasant farming family. From 1915 to 1919, he studied at the Kiev Art School then, from 1919 to 1923, at the Ukrainian State Academy of Arts under Mykhailo Boychuk. He later became one of Boychuk's closest associates. ''Kobzar'' (Ukrainian: Кобзар, "The bard"), is a book of poems by Ukrainian poet and painter Taras Shevchenko, first published by him in 1840 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Taras Shevchenko was nicknamed ''The Kobzar'' after the publishing of this book. From that time on this title has been applied to Shevchenko's poetry in general and acquired a symbolic meaning of the Ukrainian national and literary revival. The National Art Museum of Ukraine ( uk, Національний Художній Музей України) is a museum dedicated to Ukrainian art in Kyiv, Ukraine. History The National Art Museum of Ukraine, which was the first museum in Kyiv to be freely open to the public, was founded at the end of the 19th century by the efforts of Ukrainian intellectuals.
