Variola Vera
''Variola Vera'' ( Cyrillic: Вариола вера) is a 1982 Yugoslav film directed by Goran Marković. The subject of the film is based on the 1972 Yugoslav smallpox outbreak. It is a satire of the corruption of the medical and public health field. Although inspired by the real events, the movie features elements of horror. The title refers to the '' Variola vera'' virus which causes smallpox. The film garnered Marković the first prize for best director and the best screenplay at the 1982 Valencia film festival. A poll of 30 Yugoslav critics and journalists conducted in the newspaper ''Oslobođenje'' named it the Yugoslav Film of the Year for 1982. Plot The plot of the film follows the events during the smallpox epidemic in the territory of the then SFR Yugoslavia in 1972. Goran Marković (film Director)
Goran Marković ( sr-cyr, Горан Марковић, ) (born 24 August 1946) is a Serbian film and theatre director, screenwriter, writer, and playwright. He has directed approximately 50 documentaries, 13 feature films, and 3 theatre plays. He has also written five books. Marković is one of the few directors from the former Yugoslavia credited with popularizing Yugoslav films, as well as achieving success domestically and internationally. Career Marković was born in Belgrade to Rade and Olivera Marković, both established Serbian actors. He finished 5th Belgrade Gymnasium prior to attending FAMU at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. Petar Kralj ( sr-cyr, Петар Краљ; 4 April 1941 – 10 November 2011) was a Serbian theater, film and television actor. Biography Kralj was born in Zagreb to a Serb family from Banija. During World War II his family fled to Syrmia, where he grew up. He graduated from a gymnasium in Novi Sad and studied acting at the University of Arts in Belgrade. He started his acting career at Atelje 212 theater. Kralj had appeared on stage about 3,000 times, and starred in over 200 films, TV series and TV films gaining huge popularity as one of the most recognizable Serbian actors. In December 2000, he was ranked eighth in the Serbian newspaper '' Večernje novosti'' in the "Best Serbian Actors and Actresses of the 20th Century" list. Semka Sokolović-Bertok
Semka Sokolović-Bertok (22 December 1935 – 4 March 2008) was a Bosnian and Croatian actress. She also was a competitive chess player in her youth, winning the Croatian Chess Juniors Championship eight times. Personal life Semka was a descendant of an influential Sokolović family. She was born in Sarajevo, Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Her mother Abida was a seamstress. Sokolović's older sister Badema (1929–1969) was a mezzo-soprano singer. In March 2008, Sokolović's son Mario Bertok announced her death from internal bleeding following a stroke. She was 72. Career In addition to her work at a theatre in Zagreb, she appeared in numerous film roles. She made her film debut in 1956.
