Variety Time
''Variety Time'' is a 1948 American variety film directed by Hal Yates. The film is a compilation of musical numbers from various RKO features and comedy footage from RKO short subjects. Future ''Tonight Show'' host Jack Paar appears as master of ceremonies, offering comic monologues, introducing the assorted clips, and playing straight man for Hans Conried in a dialect-comedy sketch. The previously filmed sequences include comedy stars Leon Errol and Edgar Kennedy, a ''Flicker Flashbacks'' silent-movie revival, and musical numbers with dance act Jesse and James (in an out-take from the 1944 musical ''Show Business''); Lynn, Royce and Vanya in a specialty from ''Seven Days Leave'', Frankie Carle and his orchestra in a clip from ''Riverboat Rhythm'', and Miguelito Valdes in a scene from ''Pan-Americana''. Hal Yates
Hal Yates (July 26, 1899 – August 1, 1969) was an American screenwriter and film director. He wrote for 96 films between 1924 and 1953. He also directed 88 films between 1926 and 1953. He started his career in entertainment in a vaudeville double-act called 'Yates and Lawley'. Yates first worked at the Hal Roach Studios where he directed a few early Laurel and Hardy comedies (including the lost Hats Off),and later worked at the RKO studios directing short films featuring Edgar Kennedy and Leon Errol. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and died in Los Angeles, California. Hans Conried
Hans Georg Conried Jr. (April 15, 1917 – January 5, 1982) was an American actor and comedian. He was known for providing the voices of George Darling and Captain Hook in Walt Disney's ''Peter Pan'' (1953), Snidely Whiplash in Jay Ward's ''Dudley Do-Right'' cartoons, Professor Waldo P. Wigglesworth in Ward's ''Hoppity Hooper'' cartoons, was host of Ward's "Fractured Flickers" and Professor Kropotkin on the radio and film versions of ''My Friend Irma''. RKO Radio Pictures Inc., commonly known as RKO Pictures or simply RKO, was an American film production and distribution company, one of the "Big Five" film studios of Hollywood's Golden Age. The business was formed after the Keith-Albee-Orpheum (KAO) theater chain and Joseph P. Kennedy's Film Booking Offices of America (FBO) studio were brought together under the control of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in October 1928. RCA chief David Sarnoff engineered the merger to create a market for the company's sound-on-film technology, RCA Photophone, and in early 1929 production began under the RKO name (an abbreviation of Radio-Keith-Orpheum). ''Footlight Varieties'' is the third of four titles in the RKO series of variety films, combining previously filmed shorts with new musical numbers, plus monologues by master of ceremonies Jack Paar. ''Make Mine Laughs'' is a 1949 American musical comedy film directed by Richard Fleischer. The film was a compilation of comic scenes and musical numbers from RKO Radio Pictures' feature films and short subjects of the mid-1940s. It was the second of RKO's four "musical revue" features, composed largely of musical and comedy highlights from previous RKO productions. Comedian Gil Lamb hosts the proceedings, finding time to make satirical comments about the opening credits and to perform his "swallowing the harmonica" specialty. Frankie Carle (born Francis Nunzio Carlone, March 25, 1903 – March 7, 2001) was an American pianist and bandleader. As a very popular bandleader in the 1940s and 1950s, Carle was nicknamed "The Wizard of the Keyboard". "Sunrise Serenade" was Carle's best-known composition, rising to No. 1 in the US in 1938 and selling more than one million copies. Early life Carle was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on March 25, 1903. Born the son of a factory worker who could not afford a piano, he practiced on a dummy keyboard devised by his uncle, pianist Nicholas Colangelo, until he found a broken-down instrument in a dance hall. Edgar Livingston Kennedy (April 26, 1890 – November 9, 1948) was an American comedic character actor who appeared in at least 500 films during the silent and sound eras. Professionally, he was known as "Slow Burn", owing to his ability to portray characters whose anger slowly rose in frustrating situations. In many of his roles, he used exasperated facial expressions and performed very deliberately to convey his rising anger or "burn", often rubbing his hand over his bald head and across his face in an effort to control his temper.
