Four ships named ''Vansittart'', the first probably for Peter van Sittart (father of Henry Vansittart), served the British East India Company (EIC) as East Indiamen: * , of 480 tons ( bm), was launched in 1718 and was lost in 1719 on the outward leg of her maiden voyage. * , of 676 tons (bm), was launched in 1763, made four voyages for the EIC, and was sold for breaking up in 1775. * , of 829 tons (bm), was launched in 1780 and made three full voyages for the EIC before she was lost in 1789 on her way to China on her fourth voyage. helped rescue her crew and much of her treasure. * , of 1312 tons (bm), was launched at Calcutta in 1813 for the India to China trade. Henry Vansittart
Henry Vansittart (3 June 1732 – 1770) was an English colonial administrator, who was the Governor of Bengal from 1759 to 1764. Life Vansittart was born in Bloomsbury in Middlesex, the third son of Arthur van Sittart (1691–1760), and his wife Martha, daughter of Sir John Stonhouse, 3rd Baronet. His father and his grandfather, Peter van Sittart (1651–1705), were both wealthy merchants and directors of the Russia Company. Peter, a merchant adventurer, who had migrated from Danzig to London about 1670, was also a director of the East India Company. The family name is taken from the town of Sittard in Limburg, the Netherlands. They settled at Shottesbrooke in Berkshire. Educated at Reading School and at Winchester College, Henry Vansittart joined the society of the Franciscans, or the ''Hellfire Club'', at Medmenham. The East India Company (EIC) was an English, and later British, joint-stock company founded in 1600 and dissolved in 1874. It was formed to trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with the East Indies (the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia), and later with East Asia. Builder's Old Measurement (BOM, bm, OM, and o.m.) is the method used in England from approximately 1650 to 1849 for calculating the cargo capacity of a ship. It is a volumetric measurement of cubic capacity. It estimated the tonnage of a ship based on length and maximum beam (nautical), beam. It is expressed in "tons burden" ( en-em , burthen , enm , byrthen ), and abbreviated "tons bm". The formula is: : \text = \frac where: * ''Length'' is the length, in foot (length), feet, from the stem (ship), stem to the sternpost; * ''Beam (nautical), Beam'' is the maximum beam, in feet. Opium (or poppy tears, scientific name: ''Lachryma papaveris'') is dried latex obtained from the seed capsules of the opium poppy ''Papaver somniferum''.
