Vance, Alabama
Vance is a town in Tuscaloosa and Bibb counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 1,529. It is most famous for the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International plant, currently the only one in North America. The current mayor of Vance is Brenda Morrison. The Tuscaloosa County portion of Vance is part of the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area, while the Bibb County portion is part of the Birmingham– Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town of Vance was first settled in 1830 by David M. Lindley. At that time, the town was called Trion and it was a trading post on the Old Huntsville Road. In 1872, Trion was renamed Smallwood in honor of sawmill owner Charles Smallwood. In 1879, Smallwood was renamed its current name Vance in honor of Dr. William Vance of North Carolina. 1990 Pacific Hurricane Season
The 1990 Pacific hurricane season was a very active season which observed 21 named storms within the basin. The season also produced the fourth highest ACE index value on record. The season was officially started on May 15 in the eastern Pacific, and on June 1 in the central Pacific, and lasted until November 30. These dates conventionally delimit the period of each year when most tropical cyclones form in the northeastern Pacific Ocean. However, the formation of tropical cyclones is possible at any time of the year, as illustrated in 1990 by the formation of the season's first named storm, Hurricane Alma, on May 12. At the time, this was the earliest formation of a tropical storm on record in the eastern Pacific Overall, the impact of this season was minimal. Vance Seamounts
The Vance Seamounts are a group of seven submarine volcanoes located west of the Juan de Fuca Ridge. Most of the seamounts contain a caldera. They are the southernmost of several near-ridge chains located on the Pacific Plate, stemming from the Juan de Fuca Ridge. The easternmost five of the seven were surveyed using SeaBeam bathymetry. A chemical analysis of the lavas of the volcanoes indicated that the materials erupted from the volcanoes are relatively primitive. With the exception of one, the volcanoes form a nearly linear chain of circular volcanic cones.
