Vance Maree
George LaVance "Vance" "Dutch" Maree (December 20, 1909 – November 20, 1976) was an American football and basketball player for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Early years Vance Maree was born on December 20, 1909 in Savannah, Georgia to Andrew Morgan Maree and Frances Ann Johstoneaux. Georgia Tech Football He was a prominent tackle on William Alexander's football teams. Maree is a member of the Georgia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. 1928 Maree was a member of the 1928 team which was national champion. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets is the name used for all of the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), located in Atlanta, Atlanta, Georgia. The teams have also been nicknamed the Ramblin' Wreck, Engineers, Blacksmiths, and Golden Tornado. All-America
The All-America designation is an annual honor bestowed upon an amateur sports person from the United States who is considered to be one of the best amateurs in their sport. Individuals receiving this distinction are typically added to an All-America team for their sport. Some sports will have multiple All-America teams and will list the honorees as members of a first team, second team, or third team. As such, All-America teams are composed of outstanding US amateur players. Individuals falling short of qualifying for the honor may receive All-America honorable mention. The designation is typically used at the collegiate level although, beginning in 1957, high school- athletes in football began being honored with All-America status, which then carried-over to other sports like basketball and cross-country running. Frank Speer
Frank R. Speer (May 27, 1907 – June 10, 1938) was a college football player and wrestler. College football Speer was an All-American tackle for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets of the Georgia Institute of Technology; part of its national championship team of 1928. He first made the All-Southern team as a sophomore in 1927. One writer in 1930 said Vance Maree and Frank Speer had the reputation as "the toughest pair of tackles in the south." Speer is a member of the Georgia Tech Athletics Hall of Fame. Wrestling Speer once lost in a wrestling match with Bronko Nagurski due to a kneeing foul. In another wrestling match, he caused former World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey, who was officiating the contest, to knock him out. On June 1, 1938, Speer became ill but still participated in a wrestling match with Dorv Roche at Atlanta's Warren Arena. Roy Riegels
Roy "Wrong Way" Riegels (April 4, 1908 – March 26, 1993) played for the University of California, Berkeley American football, football team from 1927 to 1929. His wrong-way run in the 1929 Rose Bowl is often cited as the worst blunder in the history of college football.
