Rip Van Winkle
"Rip Van Winkle" is a short story by the American author Washington Irving, first published in 1819. It follows a Dutch-American villager in colonial America named Rip Van Winkle who meets mysterious Dutchmen, imbibes their liquor and falls asleep in the Catskill Mountains. He awakes 20 years later to a very changed world, having missed the American Revolution. The concept is ancient, including the 70-year nap by Choni HaMeA-Gail. Irving, inspired by a conversation on nostalgia with his American expatriate brother-in-law, wrote his story while temporarily living in Birmingham, England. It was published in his collection, ''The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.'' While the story is set in New York's Catskill Mountains near where Irving later took up residence, he admitted, "When I wrote the story, I had never been on the Catskills." Archie Van Winkle
Colonel Archie Van Winkle (March 17, 1925 – May 22, 1986) was a United States Marine who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions as a staff sergeant during the advance to the Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War. A combat veteran of World War II, he was called to active duty with the Marine Corps Reserve after the outbreak of hostilities in Korea and was released to inactive duty on July 16, 1951. Van Winkle again returned to active duty and served in combat during the Vietnam War. He is the only Medal of Honor recipient from Alaska. Marshall Van Winkle (September 28, 1869 – May 10, 1957) was a U.S. Representative from New Jersey, grandnephew of Peter G. Van Winkle. Biography Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Van Winkle attended the public schools. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1890 and commenced practice in Hoboken, New Jersey. He was appointed counsel to the county tax board in 1895, holding this position until his resignation to accept an appointment as the assistant prosecutor of the pleas of Hudson County, New Jersey. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1900 to the Fifty-seventh Congress. He served as assistant prosecutor of pleas from 1902 to 1905, when he resigned to become a candidate for Congress. Mina Van Winkle
Mina Caroline Ginger Van Winkle (March 26, 1875 – January 16, 1933) was a crusading social worker, suffragist, and groundbreaking police lieutenant. From 1919 until her death in 1933, she led the Women's Bureau of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia (in Washington D.C.), and became a national leader in the protection of girls and other women during the law enforcement and judicial process.
