Valur Men's Basketball
The Valur men's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur multi-sport club. History The club was founded as ''Gosi'' on 25 December 1951 and was one of the founding members of the Icelandic men's top division. On 22 December 1957 the club changed its name to ''Körfuknattleiksfélag Reykjavíkur'' (English: Reykjavík Basketball Club) and played under that name until 1970. On 3 October 1970 the club merged into Valur sports club and became its basketball department. Under the new name, Valur had considerable success in the 1980's, winning the Icelandic championship two times, in 1980 and 1983, and the Icelandic cup three times, 1980, 1981 and 1983. In 1992, Valur reached the Úrvalsdeild finals where it lost to Keflavík 2-3. In 2022, Valur won its third national championship after beating Tindastóll in the Úrvalsdeild finals. Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup
The Icelandic Men's Basketball Cup (Icelandic: Bikarkeppni KKÍ), also known as VÍS bikarinn for sponsorship reasons, is an annual professional basketball competition between clubs in Iceland. It is Iceland's first-tier cup competition, and is not to be confused with Iceland's former second-tier cup competition, the Company Cup. History and format The first edition of the Icelandic Cup championship took place in 1965, and was won by Ármann. In 1968 and 1969, the cup competition was not held, but it has been held regularly every year from 1970 onward. Teams in Úrvalsdeild karla and Division I have an automatic bye to the Final 32 while lower league teams might have to play preliminary rounds for a place, depending on the number of teams. Tim Dwyer (basketball)
Tim Dwyer is an American former basketball player and coach. During his career, he starred in Iceland where he was a three-time Úrvalsdeild Foreign Player of the Year and led Valur to both the national championship and the Icelandic Cup in 1980 and 1983. College career Dwyer played for Monte Vista High School in Whittier, California, then junior college basketball for Rio Hondo College, where he averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game in his sophomore season. He then played Division I college basketball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans men's basketball team from 1974 to 1976. In 49 games, he averaged 11.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Þórir Magnússon
Þórir Magnússon (born 13 February 1948) is an Icelandic former basketball player and the former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. Nicknamed "Rocket Man", he was known as a high scoring guard and led the Icelandic Basketball League in scoring for several seasons. Career On 20 February 1967 Þórir scored a league record 57 points for KFR against ÍS, breaking Einar Bollason’s record of 49 points. For the season he led all players in scoring, totalling 311 points for an average of 31.1 points per game. Þórir led the league again in scoring in 1968, 1970, 1972 and 1973. In 1974, he won his third straight scoring title, setting a then league record in the process with 416 points. Torfi Magnússon
Torfi Magnússon (born 6 June 1955) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national basketball team. He was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year in 1980 and won two national championships with Valur in the 1980s. In 2001, he was named to the Icelandic basketball team of the 20th century on the 40 year anniversary of the Icelandic Basketball Federation. Playing career Torfi started his senior career with Valur during the 1972–1973 season. He spent 16 seasons with Valur, winning the national championship in 1980 and 1983. Rick Hockenos
Richard Hockenos is an American former basketball player and coach. After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 1974 NBA draft he went on to play professionally in Europe. Early life Hockenos attended Bishop Duffy High School in Niagara Falls, New York. Between his sophomore and junior years he had a hip operation as he was growing to fast and the bones in his hip separated. After mediocre senior season, he was not recruited by any colleges and rejected by the schools he applied to due to academic reasons. He finally enrolled at Niagara Community College in 1969. After having a successful second season with NCCC basketball team, he decided to spend his last two seasons with Gannon College. Magnús Matthíasson
Magnús Helgi Matthíasson (born 25 February 1967) is an Icelandic former basketball player and a former member of the Icelandic national team. He played college basketball for Rice University. Club career After finishing his studies in the United States, Matthías returned to Iceland to play for Valur. He was named the Úrvalsdeild Domestic Player of the Year and the Young Player of the Year in 1991 after finishing fourth in scoring in the league. Kristófer Acox
Kristófer Acox (born 13 October 1993) is an Icelandic basketball player for Valur of the Úrvalsdeild karla and a member of the Icelandic national basketball team, with whom he participated in the EuroBasket 2017. He has won the Icelandic championship with KR three times in a row from 2017 to 2019.
