Valparaiso Crusaders Baseball
The Valparaiso Beacons baseball team is a baseball team that represents Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana. The Beacons competed in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship five times before 1970. After returning in 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, 2012 for the first time in 44 years, the Beacons' first round game was almost delayed an additional day, because the preceding game was the second-longest in NCAA tournament history. The Beacons game against the Purdue Boilermakers baseball, Purdue Boilermakers began at approximately 10:40 pm only 20 minutes before a curfew. In their second game of the NCAA tournament, the Crusaders played the 2012 Kentucky Wildcats baseball team, Kentucky Wildcats, who lost the marathon game to the Kent State Golden Flashes baseball, Kent State Golden Flashes. Lloyd McClendon
Lloyd Glenn McClendon (born January 11, 1959) is an American former professional baseball player, coach and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as an outfielder from 1987 to 1994 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers. After his playing career McClendon served as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2001 to 2005 and the Seattle Mariners from 2014 to 2015. He most recently served as the interim manager for the Detroit Tigers in 2020. Dick Phillips
Richard Eugene Phillips (November 24, 1931 – March 29, 1998) was an American professional baseball player, manager and coach. A native of Racine, Wisconsin, who attended Valparaiso University, Phillips batted left-handed, threw right-handed, stood 6 feet (1.8 m) tall and weighed 180 pounds (82 kg). Phillips' playing career extended from through , with time out for service in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Alfred James Pilarcik (July 3, 1930 – September 20, 2010) was an American professional baseball player. An outfielder, he appeared in 668 Major League games between and for the Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and Chicago White Sox. Pilarcik stood tall, weighed and threw and batted left-handed. Primarily a right fielder, Pilarcik played in over 100 games for three successive seasons (–) as a member of the Orioles.
